I think it's a comment on fanaticism and shut-ins in general. Internet culture just spotlights the fanatical shut-ins who enjoy anime. There is likely little to no causal relationship in either direction.

Not yet, but it's the same principle, just scaled up a bit.

Considering we're talking about Kane; the man who duped an entire superadvanced alien race and is well known for being entirely unkillable despite the best efforts of multiple enemy factions and several decades of war, i'd say a Death Star probably wouldn't slow him down that much.
