Doesn't require as much power, no recharge, precision, easier varied load, and can't be beaten by a giant mirror.

Well, it's a good thing that we already look for big chunks of rock aiming for us, and have the capabilities to divert them.

Won't work; you'd just end up with a big ball of smaller chunks hitting the planet, which would actually be worse.

No, you end up with a few smaller chunks if you do it wrong. If you it right, the thing just gets pushed out of the way enough so it hits something else. Like Uranus.

Asteriods are extremely brittle and crumbly, a sudden impact will shatter them.


If you want to push an Asteroid off course, you need to go attach a jet to it, and that requires that you see it in time, which you probably won't.
