Sputnik 1 was the first satellite launched into space, and set off the entire space race that culminated in the moon landings. Afterwards, the Sputnik Crisis saw billions of dollars put into the US education system, and the creation of the New Math program, intended to train a nation of engineers. In addition, the launch of Sputnik 1 spurred the US into creating the Advanced Research Projects Agency within the Department of Defense, which later became DARPA, as well as the NASA program.
