200 seeds limit?
« on: December 06, 2008, 09:13:59 am »

Is there any ways to have more than 200 seeds at once, or is it hardcoded in? 200 don't seems to be enough to make me feel safe about selling and cooking the stuff, for fear that I might accidentally use them all up before I notices, not to mention I suspect I might eventually try a heavily-populated fortress for a mega-project and 200 don't seems to be enough, even considering all of usable crop varieties!

Honestly I wouldn't worry at all, as your seeds get used up they lower below 200 so stuff like eating and brewing the crop will start producing seeds again. You won't need more then 200 seeds anyway. Farming produces oh so much more food then you would think. Anyway if you really are worried about seeds just don"t cook them, cooking seeds si only suggested if your low on food or WANT to get rid of them. They also are pretty low on the "things to trade" list especially for a large fort.

Anyway, if you have a running farming industry and 200 seeds you have a constant source of seeds which produces more then you are using which means you have no worries. Keep in mind that 2 seeds are produced from each crop when brewed/processed/eaten. So even if half your crops get cooked you still get enough seeds.

If you are looking at a BIIIIIG fortress I suggest you turn all your crops into alcohol and then cook the produced alchohol. This makes each crop produce 5 alchohol units and cooking it produces even more (can't remeber excatly how much) and this reduces your farming needs immensely whilst ensuring maximum seed production.

Crimony, when I first saw this I was thinking "GOOD LORD! Why in the world would anyone generate 200 freaking worlds?!"

I actually didn't know there was a limit on seed production.

I think that the 200 seeds limit is hardcoded at the moment.

That explains why I keep ending up at that magic number.

200 seeds isn't really that much.  Just 50 roasts.  So you do end up needing to have to micromanage your seed cooking.  One thing you can do is forbid a bag of seeds of each type.  But then you can't plant them until you unforbid.

I'm actually planning to avoid booze-cooking, seems a bit exploity, plus I keep getting spammed with error messages while doing it anyway as dwarves keep raiding the kitchen for a tipple  ;) and aye, the 200 seeds limit is plenty, I'm just a bit paranoid about running out of food and booze since I sometimes forget to check my food stocks properly  ;D Plus it'd be nice to actually have a LOT of seed to fall back onto for big growing without having to process plants at same time to get extra. I keep feeling off when I looks at the stocks screen and only see 200 of each seed every season's start, knowing I -should- have at least a dozen times that much, or more!

Am I missing something? I have an alarmingly larger number than 200 for seeds.

Or is it per seed type? I have more than 200 for some of those too.

It is 200 per seed.

Still, I have like 250 plump helmet spawn and 260 prickle berry seeds.

Not surprised... I don't think it destroys seeds to get that limit... Only stop further creation of it

as far as I can tell, once you hit the 200 limit on that type of seed, breweing/processing don't generate more seeds, however, you can still buy seeds from the caravans, which will take you over the 200 limit.

Don't worry to only have 200, as long as you still have plenty of harvested (unprocessed) plants in your stockpile nothing will go wrong.

Just don't cook seeds, you don't really need to - farming provides PLENTY of food very easily. If anything cooking them just makes it harder because your farmers will have less to plant.

Personally I end up chucking bags of seeds into the chasm/magma regularly just to keep the things at manageable levels.

And don't forget that by the time your fortress is big enough to even think about worrying about how many seeds you have, your farmers are probably going to be skilled enough to get you loads of plants out of each seed.  Seriously, a high-level farmer can easily turn 200 rock nuts or sweet pod seeds into four thousand units of food...and still have 200 of that kind of seed left over.

Seed cooking was needed when dwarves decided to store every seed in its own personalized bag. Now that Seeds get stored properly with one bag per seed type, it isn't needed as much.
