some thoughts from a newbie
« on: December 06, 2008, 06:42:39 am »

hi all

i discovered df when i aimlessly browsed the interwebs in search of cool games for my newly aquired eeepc. when i read a review, i was impressed by the sheer amount of features and detail it mentioned. i thought that can't be true, no game can have this cool little details. so i went to this forums, and i was struck by the stories from df. i laughed day after day, and i tried the game. thankfully, i read the wiki day in, day out. my first 3 fortresses where not able to survive, but now im slowly getting the hang of it, and my latest try seems like it could last a bit longer.

i have deep respect for the developer, for building such a complex game, and mostly because he can still add cool new features, so he must have a really cool technical concept behind this. (im a dev myself, although im not writing games but specialised business applications). great work!

i simply love the humour the game and the community has. the story about the one-eyed badass dwarf hit me with uncontrollable laughter :)

so im off again for playing - or more accurate - learning df. be assured to hear some stupid questions from me about things i simply dont get...

so long

I hated this game so much when I first played it. It was so... addictive. So addictive, in fact, that I wrote my assignment on it solely as an excuse to play the game and not feel guilty.

... I wrote my assignment on it...

Nice one.
I could imagine the teacher marking - "Why do you have all these plus signs and stuff before and after some words?"
"When you described a sock hitting someone in the face, why did you go down a line for each little detail?"

"This Urist guy risks everything to retrieve the socks of a fallen comrade?"

"This doesn't seem like a possible use of magma."

"Why do you hate Elves so much?"

Just out of curiosity - how do those assignments look like? What exactly do you discuss in a DF paper?

No, I knew that was what you meant.  I guess I just wrote some random bullshit for mine too, but still, wow.

Is it called: "Jack Thompson: He was right about one game." ?
