Too Much Stone!
« on: December 06, 2008, 06:08:37 am »

Simple problem. I have way too much stone lying around. Stone is lying around everywhere I dig, and I don't know what to do with it. It's making my fortress look really crumby.

Please help or I will be forced to get annoyed.

Well, there's an option to hide items if you don't want to see them cluttering the place in the most recent version - I think it's a setting under d-b or something like that.

If you really want to get RID of it, there's no really fast way to get rid of stone.

Ten years of quantum stockpiling or stone stockpile hauling, fifty thousand stone crafts, several thousand blocks taking up less stockpile space... those are your main vanilla options. If you have magma, you could try melting it all into nothing by flooding the rock area with magma, but this is probably risky (and difficult to clean up after).

And yeah, especially if you go with making blocks, this makes a good excuse to make an aboveground megaproject. If you have woodland on the surface, try walling off a tree farm for yourself. Or blockade invaders and traders into a specific route to tear them to pieces. Or something cool rather than something to try and "win." :V

I'd go with 4 or 5 siege operators. Build the catapults in the room that you want stone free (e.g. dining room). Make sure they face the wall. Then simply disable all labours and enable siege operating for 4 or 5 peasants. Easy, fast and the stone is smashed into dust.

I've cleared large spaces this way. They start out slow, but when they get to legendary they clear a room really fast. Start with agile dwarves instead of peasants to go even faster.

I've gotten the habit of chasming, or lava dump, stones while i dig. That way i wont be stuck with 20k stones when i decide i want to get rid of them.

I put my dumping ground by my stone-consuming workshops and dump the stones that clutter my rooms and stuff. I don't give a crap about the stone in my tunnels and minor hallways.

1 square stone dumps work well.

However, you should put a door to it, because if dwarves will toss rotting items, or chunks, or whatever in there and cause miasma.

And thus did the dream of dwarven antigravity fade away, not with a massive explosion or a flood of magma, but with a whimper.

I'm going to be depressed all day now.

My favorite solution is just to have no stone stockpiles, but build big towers and stuff aboveground instead of having most of the fort below ground. That way, I don't dig up as much rock, and what I do dig up, gets turned into my castle. The stonecrafters take care of the rest of it. In fact, I've found myself having to quarry to get MORE stone doing it this way.

My method: Catapults above a workshop room that uses stones, channel out the tile to the below rooms thats right against the wall, and watch as your siege operating dwarves slowly fill a nice line of hundreds of stones for your workshops.

Usually, I build the stone depot spot as a separate room to the workshop and lock the door till i think theres sufficient stones piled up, so my siege operators don't try to go get the stones they just flung into the pit.

For one square stone dumps, just make sure it is only accessible from a diagonal. Miasma doesn't travel diagonally.

I usually set up temporary drawbridges in the bigger rooms, and atom smash the suckers!

Bad, don't waste your stones!
Do you know how many fortresses are begging for stones from their fellow Dwarves?

I currently have:

3 craftsdwarf workshops churning out stone mugs
2 mason workshops churning out stone furniture
1 mechanic workshop churning out mechanisms
many stockpiles aboveground for special types of stone to be used in massive constructions.

I have so many mugs and mechanisms, that I regularly buy out caravans and give them double to triple their money just to get rid of the stuff.

You must get massive sieges?

Not yet.

I'm only a year or two in.  I've only had one siege - and it was just one squad.

We'll see what happens when I start mining that adamantine vein.
