I checked the wiki, but it wasn't very clear.  Where are common places to find sand other than beaches and deserts?

Do rivers sometimes have sandy banks?  Is sand ever underground?  Just wondering if I should start a glass industry or not...

Aside from the predictable places you mention, it can be scattered around.

Some areas have entire soil areas that are sand.

I've found that the location of sand isn't always obvious from just looking at the screen.  Try creating a "zone" somewhere outside (maybe over dry grass) and see if "sand collection" is highlighted.
