Crocodile vandalism
« on: December 04, 2008, 04:34:45 pm »

The most bizarre thing just happened in my fort...

First a little backstory... I tapped the cave river many years ago, and set up cage traps to prevent the wildlife from venturing into my fortress.  As such, I have about 14 tame cave crocodiles roaming the halls.  They are great for defense and have snatched their share of kobold thieves over the years.

Several years ago, I found the corpse of the Human Guild Representative in the main stairwell, with a few human chunks scattered around as well.  I never caught the culprit, but I suspected one of the crocodiles went rogue for one reason or another.  If it did, it never attacked anything else, and I forgot about the issue, besides the annoyance of not being able to place special orders with the humans.

Just now, however, a crocodile named Mulodlug has embarked on what I can only describe as a campaign of serial vandalism in my fortress.  He only targets statues, and I have quite a few statues sprinkled in the common areas of my fortress.  My log is filled with "Obsidian Statue toppled by Mudolug, Stray Cave Crocodile (Tame)".  But none of my fortress guard, military, or other animals seem to care, even though he is listed as "Hostile" in the unit list and is doing this all in broad, um, fortresslight.

Anyone have any idea what's going on here?  I'm not discounting the possibility that he killed a dog or something before I tamed him, but he never attacks any of my dwarves, and I verified in a recent save that he was named, yet listed as Tame in the unit list instead of Hostile, before this iconoclasm began.  I'm not considering it a bug because it's so hilarious, but i can't think of any documented behavior that would cause it.

You'd best chain and farm them for +Crocodile Leather Handbags+. Plus, I like to imagine Crocodile bone bolts as croc teeth being shot into a goblin's loins.

This wouldn't explain the human-murder, however.

It would be certainly worthwhile if that behavior could be replicated...

When a creature is tamed after having killed a sentient they will turn out like your croc, and they are immune to traps, but your military should be attacking him if the squad is set to harass dangerous wild animals. I think the default is ignore, go to (m)ilitary menu and (v)iew squad and (a)nimals setting.

a) He's been tame for years without incident (other than maybe the human liason thing), along with a dozen other crocs
b) He only destroys statues
c) I can't butcher, chain, pit, or cage him, since he's Hostile
d) I tried a military squad with Harrass on, no results
e) War dogs and other trained animals walk right past him

I thought taming sentient-killers was impossible?

Do you have magma?

Yes, both a pipe and a pool, actually.  Why?

And, iirc, you can train a killer beast, but they never lose the taste for blood, and keep attacking you after they've been trained.  Either that or your dwarves hold a grudge, and try to get revenge.

This is the most awesome thing ever; a tempermental croc with a hatred of statues.

Give him a lair filled with statues, water, prisoners and a temple.

I can't shake the feeling that this is another of those things like the "dwarves engrave stuff relating to what other dwarves think about".  Animal likes/dislikes, inscrutable true HFS that Toady threw in and never mentioned.

Well you can always drop the square he's in to -35253666 Celsius with Tweak to deal with the bugged critter once and for all

Do remember to raise it back or everyone entering said square will freeze to death
