Displaying the new hair/fur/scales/etc. changes
« on: December 04, 2008, 03:04:25 pm »

The new dev log entry is very Toady and very, very awesome (although the two terms are pretty much synonymous by now) - what I'm wondering now is what we'll see in terms of in-game changes due to the new hair changes.

Such as, will the changes be limited to the description screen of each dwarf and just be a general indicator of age? Will we see, say, wisps and chunks of grey fur among the gore left after a wolf fight? Dwarves having their eyebrows singed off? Since the materials system is going through such massive change, perhaps it won't be too outlandish to see animal fur as being able to improve crafts or be a craft category in their own right.

So, what do you think the changes will mean in gameplay terms?

I'm also curious how this information is currently displayed in-game.

I think a lot of this is going to end up in the descriptive paragraphs Toady is implementing after he gets through wounds. I imagine you will be able to view a written description of a given dwarf/human/goblin/carp/borgle somewhere to get an idea about how strong/tough/old they are and maybe an idea of their injuries.

I'm not sure if this is going to have any mechanical changes to the game at the moment but it certainly make everything more distinctive, which seems to be the overall goal of this game.

Beards are the humanoid equivilent... Forget beards and fur and think about claws growing upon maturity or such...

I'm loving the new update that deals with creatures changing slightly over time. Once he adds support for more than one change period, I'll finally be able to add a life cycle to those giant winged lizard bipeds I modded in instead of using four different creatures.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Um, he's already tackled polymorphism where the different stages/castes can be completely different. This new update only relates to like hair color and length.

I'm excited about fur/wool being added as materials and being able to shear sheep and wait for the wool to grow back.

If I wanted to recreate the world of one of my favorite stories, I should be able to specify that there is a civilization called Groan, ruled by Earls from a castle called Gormanghast.
You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..

Yeah probably some ASCII chars will be used to display the new stuff.
PS.
Perhaps you should've posted this in the Future of the Fortress thread, instead of making a new topic about it.  ;)
