Magma pit is a little chilly
« on: December 04, 2008, 01:45:11 am »

So, I have this portion of magma designated as my garbage dump and as my pit, and I've noticed that puppies will occasionally NOT incinerate and just sort of sit there in the lava until they somehow drown instead.  Has anyone else ever seen this?  Any ideas what's causing it?

Did you turn off the temperature?

Or, did you send them in the lava, while they were still in their packaging.

*double take*

Oh it's dwarf fortress.  How are you putting the puppies in the lava?

Multi-animal dropper
You make room made above a made pool of said hazard, and instead of utilizing floors in said building, it's a bridge, it is loaded from the top, and pull said bridge connected lever to watch those leg humping fags burn.
Single Animal Dropper
You need a designated pit on top of said hazard, the dwarves drop them into said pit, then you fill it in, if that doesn't work, build a small tower to drop said animal off of it.

Temperature is on and the puppy is unwrapped and fresh out of the womb.

And, no, I'm not using a bridge.  I've got a channel dug filled with lava, and then I designated a zone around the channel as a Pit.  I had the puppy Pitted, so someone chucked him down there, but instead of burning, he's just sort of sitting there.

That's weird.  Does he have the blue "projectile" background icon?

this is a known bug: units, that land on units, are the hap-happiest seem to become limitedly immortal. This means that dwarves that are dropped 10 z-levels onto some puppies are a-Ok.
Though I've never tested this myself.

Don't worry. Known bug. Save, reload, and they'll be in flames.

Wait, BOILING rock?  Were you modding any materials like stone, wood, metal or whatever?

Nope, didn't mod any materials except to add anthracite to the game.  I DID use Tweak to raise the temperature of the lava to the maximum, though, if that helps.

Did you generate a new world after adding anthracite?  If not, I have this vague idea that you might have bumped the material indices resulting in various melting/boiling points for flesh and stone getting switched or something.  But using Tweak would explain the boiling rock, so probably not.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

Haha.  It's an experiment, but it hasn't really grown on me either.
