This game is huge
« on: December 03, 2008, 11:16:16 pm »

hello there

a few days ago I found this game, from what I read it sounded amazing,

so I downloaded it and tried playing it

and wow is this game confusing at first, very little makes sense,

but I have kept going at it and I just learned how to mine now and its starting to get fun, but everthing is so big!,

and to mange all these little guys at once, feels a little overwhelming

anyway I just wanted to introduce myself, just trying to get into this game

Welcome to the forum, enjoy your stay. The game is confusing at first. In case you haven't found it yet, the Wiki is incredibly helpful when you're just starting out.

The "Your First Fortress" page and the FAQs are very, very useful. Hell, just browsing the wiki helps a lot. And don't be shy to look something (by which I mean everything) up upon first encountering it.

You're right that the game has a very steep learning curve. Part of this, of course, is because the game's still in an early stage and lacks official documentation. But keep at it and keep your head on your shoulders and you'll do fine.

Also don't hesitate to ask questions on these forums, just make sure to search before you make a thread, sometimes the questions have been answered many times on here. ;)

Welcome to Dwarf Fortress! Hope you like miasma!

Yarr. The game had me pinned for the first few days, but you sort of sink into it. Don't be afraid of failure; your forts will collapse in a spiral of tantrums, your adventurers will get utterly eviscerated by projectiles, your dwarves will inexplicably charge into the crossfire to reclaim their fallen friends' socks, your nobles will punish you for no rational purpose, and carp will rise from the sea and pillage your lands.

But before long the magnificence of your dining room will quell the tantrums, your adventurer will single-handedly clear goblin fortresses by clubbing his attackers to death with his own pants, your dwarves will still grab socks mid-battle but carry an axe and at least get some work done, your nobles will punish you not too long before you activate their bedroom's flooding device, and even the carp will shudder in fear of your ten floor, one hundred dwarf fortress.

Enjoy the game, and congratulations on sticking through the initial complexity! Between games or while playing, I heartedly endorse the Community section of the forum. We've got incredible stories in great score that flavor the game itself quite well.

Should someone perhaps mention "cats" as well?

I am pretty sure that you will have loads of fun with DF in the upcoming months/years. I guess you will also agree, that Toady deserves something for this magnificent piece of software...thus do not forget about this section of the website: http://www.bay12games.com/support.html  :)

agreed.

also, don't construct or use traps, weapons, or armor. those are for panzies.

Its also a bad idea to produce alcohol. These dwarves need an intervention.

And to think Christian, this game isn't even half-way done yet and we are about to have a major update 1st-2nd quarter next year!

Welcome!

The most fun is had when you embark beside a terrifying ocean, trust me.
