what i did was go into the raws, then the stone and soil layers and removed the aquifer tag(it says that stone/soil layer will be accompanied by an aquifer) from EVERYTHING. mainly because im lazy, i want my worlds to stop being infested with aquifers, and i want life handed to me on a silver platter.
preferably studded with platinum.

mmk this one is really my last question maybe mmk so i cant see any other civs i think this is because at the start it gives you that little kinda box and you go and embark and thats how big your map will be right? so i was wondering do i make my map bigger or is it because my world is new also can i go past that invisible wall that you make at the start of the game if you dont understand what im talking about please tell me what you dont understand and ill try to clear it up

The size of the embark location has no relevance to whether another civilization will come.  Note that it takes a little while for the first traders to even show up, much less the thieves and the invaders.

If by the end of Fall of your first year you don't have a dwarven caravan then you can be concerned about it.  Other civilizations won't visit you at all until at least your 2nd year.

However I get the feeling you were asking whether another civilization's fortress should show up on your map, for that to happen you need to literally embark on their settlement.  Other civilizations don't build things on your map, but they will of course send hordes of enemies to destroy what YOU create.

An aquifer simply is a layer of wet rock that keeps making more water. It's a bit of a challenge to dig under one, so you should avoid aquifers unless you really want to try out building pumps and stuff.

If you want to see what different places (aquifers, evil ocean beaches, whatever) are like, use the location finder before embarking. Some places are like a dwarven paradise ... others will wipe you out by the second year.

(I also use the Finder to avoid aquifers, rather than modding the game raws ... same result though.)

The size of your starting location equals the size of your "level" later, where you build the fort. 6x6 is a fairly large area, some players (possibly those with slower computers) prefer like 4x4 or even smaller. There's no way to get past the borders of this area in Dwarf Mode (not yet).

After you've activated dwarves into the military, press m to get the military screen, and w to see what weapons and armor they're using. I'd recommend chain mail and wrestling at first, though you'll want a crossbowdwarf or two soon.

On the (m) military menu, scroll to a soldier and press v. Now press s, a and t (s = "sleep in room" to keep him happier, a = squad harrasses dangerous animals, and t = off duty. Soldiers will train their skills while off duty, which is a good idea.)

It's also helpful to put an armor stand or weapon rack near your entrance and assign it as a barracks, so if a Kobold Thief turns up there's usually a sparring military dwarf nearby.

I'd recommend chain mail and

Chainmail?  CHAINMAIL?! :o  We'll excuuuuze me Mr. veterain player - able to get chainmail within a year or two.  I'm lucky if I can get wooden shields at this point with my level of organization.

Right. That sounded a bit ... unrealistic.
My own current fort has lasted just over 2 years so far, and I got like 4 complete sets of chain mail, some plate the dwarves sold us in exchange for food, with everyone else including both fortress guards running around in leather and scrambling off to "pickup equipment" whenever another piece of metal armor gets made. (Only got those 4 chainmails because a) I embarked with 40 bituminous coal and b) there are tons of iron on my map).

About the mason ex; You wish to know what sort of workshop is required by X profession?
If there's a building that you cannot build it will say what is needed on the side.
Pipes is used in pumps and here you can read about traps - http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Traps

The wiki has very good articles on the workshops and stuff, so you should be able to find out who and what makes what.

Also, if you want to know what job is necessary to build a building, you can after the building is placed. Just look at the building (press q and hover over the building) after it's placed and it'll tell you which job needs to go there, starting usually with "needs architecture" or something similar.
