to increase your forts population you have to wait for migrants to show up.
they usually do so in the spring of your second year.(the year you started in being the first.) after that im not sure if there's a schedule for migrants to show up.
a graphics mod will not change your gameplay other than making the game look different, and maybe change some hotkeys and stuff in the .ini
EDIT: oh and it will say what version the mod is compatible with so you dont have to worry since that particular one is compatible with the latest version.
however you will need to create a new folder and new world for it to take effect.

Hi Begory, welcome to bay12 forums, i hope you like it here! its alot of fun.

i'm not sure what you mean by 'population of my dwarfs' but i'm assuming you mean 'how do i get more dwarves', and that is quite simple. as you play, you will receive migrants that will appear and join you about once or twice a year.

if by chance you mean TOTAL population, i believe you can mod it to be higher than 200 i believe.

Welcome.
Migrants arrive from time to time during the whole year and the amount depends on your fortress wealth. The known(to the migrants) wealth depends on the dwarven traders and is updated when they leave the site.
There is also offspring from married couples but it takes 12 years for them to become adults.
For max population/children check the init.ini in the data folder.

Mike maydays graphic pack comes ready to use so just download it and play.
If you've got a save you want to use simply move the save folder to the new DF folder

If you haven't found it yet - http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net
Wery helpfull

*que creepy high-pitched voice*
"Oooh, crunchy crunchy Newb!"

resonantly started to play
So how does that work?

The tile that shows a cage is in itself the cage and will contain all of the little critters you capture within the cage.  That was your question, right?

Oh, come on, I'm just kidding.  When I make remarks like that, you really shouldn't take them like that.  Everything I could have contributed had already been said, so I thought I'd say something crazy to welcome you to this crazy forum.

It's a lot of people's way of saying welcome on this forum.  Like I said, crazy forum.

So.  Jail cells.  Personally, I use metal chains.  But you have a gobbo in a cage, so that won't work.  I believe that if you designate a room with "r," doors will act as a boundry for the room unless the door is set as internal.  Of course, since it's a cage that isn't used for the justice system, dwarves will treat the room as a zoo and gather in there.

Im sorry for this thread its gotten bigger then expected im just so fascinated by this game and this are questions that are bugging me threw out the day so you'll have to excuse me. now im not getting any stone i know why but i dont know what it is. t the start of my campaign i clicked embark and it sayed this area has aqua (something like that) it might be hard to find stone

your looking for the word "aquifer"
im pretty sure that means that your stone layers will leak water.
you can find ways to fix this on the dwarf wiki.
as for your problem with getting no non-dwarf visitors it might have to do with
your terrain make a copy of your save of your fortress, abandon and go look back at where you started. hit tab untill it shows your neighbors.(what can access your sight)
and yes, this game can conjur up some REALLY wierd questions.
if i fill the water with magma will i get fish fossils in obsidian?
are catapulting kittens or elves more effective?

EDIT: edited because of possible spoilers.

Aquifers are underwater sources of water that inhibit you from reaching stone but at the same time they provide an unlimited source of fresh water and fishing (oddly enough.)  Getting past an aquifer is quite difficult for a new player and even experienced players depending on what they have to work with.

To enlist a dwarf into the military press "m" to bring up the military screen and then press "a" on any dwarf you want to activate or deactivate from service.  Alternatively you can press v and select a dwarf on screen hitting p for that dwarfs preferences and then hitting a again.
