Removing "Champions"
« on: December 03, 2008, 08:15:27 am »

Is it possible to remove the "Champion" position, and instead have the Dwarves remain Hammer Lord, Elite Marksman, etc...?

Er... no.

They have to be below (Ithinkitisgreatbutimnotsure) some level for them to remain that way.

I would prefer that champions be removed from the core game, if only because I like having different colored soldiers.

Relatively sure that's not something in the raws, but hardcoded. Sorry, pal.

Could perhaps suggest the ability to customize a Dwarf's colour? (Same way we do nicknames and professions)

This is something I would also be interested in. Not only for asthetic reasons, but also so that the goblins would at least pose some kind of challenge to my military!

For now, making the goblins tougher works well.

I was going to suggest switching the quotations in the title, but seeing as you still want them...

Won't it stop you from changing the position after becoming a 'hero'?

I'd actually like them to be named "Champion [soldier type]". So you'd have champion hammerdwarves, champion axedwarves, etc. Would definitely make it easier to figure out if you were dispatching marksdwarves or wrestlers to defensive positions.

And better goblins doesn't work. I've got orcs, and while lots of my military dies, the ones that survive hit champion within a year (two sieges). Kind of like a survival of the fittest training program.

The [SLOW_LEARNER] tag on dwarves makes military training brutally difficult. Your best bet is to just keep throwing immigrants into the military and praying that some live long enough to hit Proficient.

Blatant thread necromancy!
Does all this still apply for 40d or later?
I would like to stop my dwarves ever reaching hero or champion status or whatever. It kinda ruins my Urist McHermit fortress when the only inhabitant thinks he's too awesome to work...

I would welcome:
- a trick for moving or removing the limit where the dwarf hits the hero status
- a hack or something that reverts the dwarf back to a normal working-class dwarf while retaining the weapons skills

Less-than-welcome solutions:
- [SLOW_LEARNER] or similar skill speed edits that affect ALL skills
- switching to another weapon, which just postpones the inevitable

If you know it's necromancy WHY? Just start a new thread rather then revive this two year old rotting corpse.

Anyway, in DF 2010 champion is just another noble position, and any member of the military can do any job no matter how skilled they are (in theory, it's all still rather buggy and sometimes they get stuck training and won't work).

for .40d you can use dwarf companion (I think?) to remove them from the military. I can't help you with it though since I don't use it myself.

Whoa. I didn't realise 40d was released such a long time ago. I figured the things said in this thread applied to, like, 5 versions back. And I reeeally don't want to touch DF2010 anymore. Dorfs don't gain attributes over time. At all. They just lose them. Not to mention, the cheats to correct this behavior don't work either. It's also essentially broken for skill gains, too. Otherwise (tweaking the rate of) skill decay would've solved this problem. I don't feel too comfortable attempting memory editing either. Looks like I'm f-cked for now (unless reverting to an earlier save and avoiding fights altogether).

You can tweak the skill and stat decay easily, even remove it. If you care to read Shaostul's guide thread or the modders' workshop thread you will see that it's easy to do.

Also dwarves gain stats from skill leveling, whoever told you otherwise was wrong.
