Course you don't get bloody wafers with it. Albatross!
« on: December 03, 2008, 04:36:05 am »

Anyways. I am doing a large birds mod with the hope of adding albatross, hawks, falcons, pelicans and storks (feel free to suggest more).
I am looking for some help with my mod. It is my first attempt at modding with dwarf fortress so I may need some constructive criticism about details I may have messed up.

Albatross:

It's all I got at the moment, I have to go to sleep now but in the morning I will be adding more.

Why is the albatross a [LARGE_PREDATOR]?

That would make them attack people, which isn't what albatrosses do.

Unless it's a giant albatross of course.

Yeah, that albatross is pretty badass. It's bigger than a human, does 1-6 damage with it's beak, and hunts down anything smaller than it (all civilized races).

Is this an Alfred Hitchcock mod or something?

Good idea, I am a real novice at this and I can't figure out how the biome tags work. Am I doing it right?

Done. Also what should the frequencies be set to? I don't quite understand how it works as the Giant Eagle (which I based these creatures off) did not have a frequency tag.

chaos and death from the skys has definately been a bit lacking in my fortresses in the past, looks like I now have the gear to fix that.  I think you are probably better off with the savage tag, ive been playing with the age of shadows mods that has plenty of passive fliers like partriges and geese, they have a tendancy to float around in one area scaring off dwarves until a hunter comes along and blows the crap out of them.   They are a good food source but not that interesting, your albatross on the other hand....
Ive been thinking a bit on an alfred hitchcock style birds mod for a while with swarms off small but super agressive fliers.   I havent done any modding yet but its high time I learnt, if I make a crossbow-axe and would my woodcutters blast away at passing threats?

I see the title of the thread and think of the Terry Pratchett's newest book, Nation.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

one thing i noticed is your penguin's [SWIM_SPEED:5000]
it will actually make them swim slower than normal, see: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Speed
basically, speed is a complicated calculation and lower numbers in the raws are faster in game/higher in game speed value
if you want them to swim as fast as normal creatures move on land then use [SWIM_SPEED:900]

edit: you might also want to add more layering on the penguins because they live in cold climate, the creatures in large_tundra have 200 or 300
