Theif Message
« on: December 03, 2008, 03:41:15 am »

I just got my first thief.  However, shortly after getting the message that he had showed up, I brought all my dwarfs inside and pulled up the only drawbridge entrances/exits.  However, shortly before he arrived I had just finished carving a hole in the roof of the main hallway to prevent my dwarfs from getting cave adaption.  Unfortunately, I didn't have time to wall it off, so I'm assuming he crawled in through the hole.  I assume this because a little while after I raised the drawbridges, I got a message saying that he had stolen some bolts.  Not a big deal, but I'd like to make the little bastard pay for interrupting my dwarfs work.  I've drafted my hunter and a couple war dogs (my pitiful "army", I plan on recruiting the majority of the next immigrant wave, but I needed the last wave for other work), and now have them patrolling the halls.

However, it had been a day or two and I was wondering if he had gotten away.  Then I realized that I didn't even know what exactly triggered that message.  That little story having been told, my question is, does the message saying that a thief has stolen something pop up when they pick it up, or after they escape the map with it?

Thanks!

The message "Thief! Catching the skulking filth!" Pops up when you see him for the first time: He' hidden until spotten.

The message "A thief has stolen -Kitten bone bolts-" appears when he gets out of the map with your stuff.

If he stole bolts, chances are he just picked up some used bolts your hunters had left lying around. They tend to do that... they don't seem to care about the quality of what they steal, just that they steal something.

if anyone died and left items laying outside, thiefs will abscond with those when its easier than sneaking inside the fort.

As it turns out, I think he just grabbed a couple of my hunter's missed shots and ran off.  Kinda funny, cause I found a blood stain and the three missing arrows right at the edge of the map when the elven caravan showed up.....  Another showed up, but he showed up next to my woodcutter, who I temporarily drafted.  Axe in head, head-a-splode, back to work.

Hmmm, wonder how he got in then... must've slipped in and out before I got the bridges up, fast little bugger.  Good to know though, thanks!  Although from what I understand I should still wall off the hole, as other things can jump through, or is that just generally not possible at the moment?

Yeah but sometimes they really do seem to care what they steal. A kobold recently made off with Elderbowel my artifact Adamantine harp :( . That theft alone lowered my wealth by almost 1.5 million

I wonder if they sort of balance between what they know they can get, and risking some level of suicide for much larger items...

I laughed so hard when I read that :P  Problem is, I don't really give the little bastards the choice.  They can pick between death by dwarf, or drowning.  I don't really care which, although I prefer the dwarfs to kill them in certain cases, just so I don't waste time :P

Flying creatures (like eagles) can fly in through the open hole, but only if there is a valid walking path to that destination.

In that case I'm not to concerned about it.  the only real wildlife I've seen so far is deer and he occasional squirrel or fox.

Becareful tho about letting them steal what they please. `I used to leave the clothing of failed goblin ambushes/seiges lay outside my fort and just roll my eyes when the kobolds by the dozen would come and steal  narrow leather thongs. At least untill they finally decided I had valuable enough things inside my fort to send a raiding party.

Said rading party of about 10 managed to sneak thru my barracks at the front gate, down a very busy main corridor, past all the workshops before finally being found by a kitten in a side corridor. They then proceded to hack down most of my fortress, including my standing army of 30 champion wrestlers/armor/shield users, (5 of which where also champion hammerdwarfs) before finaly meeting their end at my owned cat disposal room.
