Now that's just sad

*sigh* Lamest death for a champion ever.

My first Champion on a evil glacial map I'm playing was this grizzled hammerdwarf. He fought off two ambushes pretty much single-handedly (8 notable kills), killed an ogre, and killed 5 ice wolves. He loses an eye to the ogre, but takes it down. In true dwarven fashion, he then goes on to even more great deeds with only one eye.

More ogres show up, and he and some other warriors are sent to dispatch them. He gets there first, and gets into an epic fight with one of them. By the end, the ogre is fleeing and he's dead tired and a little bruised. The other ogre comes over, and starts wailing on him. He's too tired to fight back effectively at this point, and takes a bit of a beating. About this time the other warriors show up and make quick work of the ogre. Old one-eye is a bit hurt, but he'll recover fine.

Well...he would have. If the dwarf that was rescuing him didn't dump his unconscious body down on one of the few weapon traps I have set up. So he gets diced by our own defenses because some lazy peasant wants a drink.

Not exactly a heroic death. I wish he'd gone down to the ogre instead. That I would have been fine with.

Votes on what I should do to the peasant?

First, build an arena for gladiatorial matches. 

Second, capture some enemies.  Ogres if possible.

Third, make the peasant fight the captured enemies in the arena.  (Might be more fair to outfit him with armor and a weapon, just so he actually has a chance against a horde of enemies.)

Fourth, make sure the floor of the arena has weapon traps with only one or two low-power weapons placed at random intervals.

Fifth, enjoy the spectacle.  Particularly if the peasant falls unconscious on one of the weapon traps, and is only horribly mangled rather than killed outright.

I agree with throwing him in an arena.  I also suggest equipping him well, not so that he has a chance, but rather so that he lasts as long as possible, suffering as many wounds as possible so that he learns what the champion he murdered had gone through in protecting his worthless ass.

Force him into the army and train him up as a hammer dwarf. Equip him well and let him practice his weapon skills. Then send him out by himself to every siege/ambush/orge/whatever and let him deal with it alone.

When he eventually dies, send the rest of the army out.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Lock him in a room covered in traps until he falls asleep.  For added bonus, fill it with cage traps and then dump him into some magma.

Use companion to bring back the champion as an undead. I think you can wing it from here.

Do the arena thing with these steps:
1)  Make it so that the peasant can be locked in.  Lock him in
2)  Build a second section to the arena that can be linked to the first via lever pull.
3)  Chain an Ogre in the unoccupied section.  Put a barrel of booze in there so that once the two section are linked the peasant must get past the Ogre to get to the booze.  Make sure the Ogre and peasant can't escape into the rest of the fort.
4)  When the peasant is at the point of dehydration, link the arena segments.

This, but I'd lock him in a room filled with really low-powered weapon traps.

Open up the ceiling so food and drink can be dropped in.

I imagine the scenario like this:

"Why am I in this room?  By Armok, it's boring.  Nothing to do.  May as well take a nap...OW!  %#$%!  What was that?"

Time passes.  "Getting sleepy again.  Going to get some shut-eye....$^#&, my arm!  Oh look, some food."  Munching.  "Now to get a good night's rest..."

Etc.

Bonus points is that if any of the traps jammed, I do believe that the peasant would helpfully clean them.  If they're nice traps that he can admire, he might stay alive, a long, long, long, long time.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

I agree with Kanil. Train him to be the spirit of death, bringer of doom to your enemies so he might have the chance to wash his guilt away with blood. Eventually even make him armor and weapon of adamantine, but only if he proves to be the one to deserve forgiveness.

BUT treat him nicely. Build him a private quarters of obsidian or pitchblende. Let his weapon make friends with captives... and the Hammerer... and the nobles. You know what to do.

Hmmm. I am kind of tempted to do this. Turn him into a one-man death squad and let him see how well he washes away his guilt. He'll either redeem himself or die trying.

No adamantine on this map, but my mod does have some superior materials I can use. Maybe Void crystal. That has both coolness factor (It's dark purple. In my mind I see it as being almost black, except when the light hits it) and quality to it. I'll have to make a bunch and outfit him in a full suit of it. Fortunately I've got the materials on this map to do that. Provided he lives long enough to be worthy of it, of course.

You know what? I think I'll make a story out of this guy. Start with the basic back-story (maybe from his point of view), and then take him from his sentencing, through some training, and into his subsequent battles until he either dies or I decide he's washed away his guilt. I'll have to limit how much training he gets. He's not allowed to come anywhere near Champion status until he's proved himself in combat. Maybe just the very basics.

This should be interesting.

Will he be a lazy good-for-nothing teenager before the event occurs? Also, on top of the above have him fight gladiator battles. Maybe even do the Conan and work some screw pumps to boost his physical stats. That's not technically training, it's hard labour :D

Not a bad idea. Give him some stats first.

As for the arena, we'll have to see what my cage traps bring in. I'm mostly fighting Chaos Dwarves lately, and they have Trap Avoid, which makes it hard to catch them alive. But if I get some decent enemies, or even better an Ogre or Werewolf, I'll make an area so he can provide amusement for the others.
