100's of enemies, and bored
« on: December 02, 2008, 12:05:31 am »

well i started on a map and was overjoyed when i found it swarming with things wanting to kill me....but then im like "why havent they attacked". so i look around and find that most of them are in the bottomless pit....unable to get out. what the hell is the point in sticking them in there if i get to control when they come out? is it the same with chasms? how do i find a map where it will require extreme measures just to survive?

Evil glacier nano-fort. I prefer this setup with Legendary Lands, but that's probably just me.

No! Not the blind fishes!

And if you wonder why blind monsters are bad, check out army ants.

Glacier cavern fortress, bonus points for a megabeast, extra points for using the cave as a convoluted enemy slaying entrance, extra bonus points for putting sasquatches in the depths to maul victims.. I mean siegers in the frozen halls.

You can set an option to display them on embark, but only when you generate the world - which is kind of retarded, since while displayed they irrevocably override the surrounding terrain, making embark a total bitch.

I think its actually in the world creation options, caves show up as grey circles just like stone.  I started off what I thought was going to be an easy map with a cave, magme, sand, no chasm etc and the Skeleton pike master that ran the place just wandered up and gutted all 7 of my dwarves in about 2 mins of starting, another had 5 giant cave spiders in it.  Zombie fish are good, I also like playing with the legendary lands mod and then doing all I can to start wars with as many races as possible.  destroying bridges on other peoples roads really pisses them off, other than that its the "merchant learn to swim" progam with associated "lock the diplomat in a tiny room between two doors until the bastard wigs out" program.  Im currently playing with the age of shadows mod as goblins and am getting hammered everytime that the demonspawn turn up.  Fallout mod is good for a challange and I hear good things about kobold camp.  check the goblin family page in the modding section too.
Most important thing to remember: weapon traps are for cowards and elves.

Evil swamps all the way! There's nothing more fun than a harpy raid in an aboveground fortress.

Vermin.

If you embark to any swamp at all, bring cats or trappers. I prefer trappers, as they provide a food source.
