I have several engravings of a random human adventurer fighting a cougar and stabbing its eye out / shooting it.

It's pretty cool.

I think you get "Adventurer versus Animal" stuff when either that adventurer or animal were significant in history of your civ (like, ambushed and shred some dwarves or whatever).

But might as well be random.

No, I've heard it has to do with where you are. For instance if you have your fort in "Swamp of Dikes" then you'll get engravings of things that happened in "Swamps of Dikes" It may be fun to look where the biggest dwarf/elf wars were held, as long as it wasn't in a town, and embark there.

A quick scan of the stocks menu shows that one of the dead pack animals has a bin full of silk cloth!  It is speedily unforbidden, and my moody glassmaker sprints off to retrieve his prize amongst the smoking, charred, blood-soaked ruin that is the outdoors, totally oblivious to the carnage that was instigated on his behalf.

My best engraving so far involved an alligator eating an elf. It's all over my fortress, so clearly it must have been an important event.

It's not important, it's hilarious! Best way to start the day is to see an elf getting eaten by an alligator.

The only thing that would be better would be an engraving of an elf murdering and cannibalizing another elf, then another engraving of an alligator devouring said elf.

I've had two recent good ones:

  • Engraved on the floor is an exceptionally designed image of two burning quarries by Sibrek Sulusmothkat.
  • Engraved on the wall is an exceptionally designed image of a grim reaper by Sodel Melbildur.

The first one confuses me, as it doesn't say it has any symbolism to my civ (I have details on). The second one is made even better by the fact that it's the first engraving in my king's room, right next to a picture of a falling orc (of which I have 100+, due to having a pit to drop every siege down 10-13 z levels).

Edit: I just noticed engravings of frozen elf corpses (even though I in a temperate zone) and one of my king's artifact coffin in his own bedroom.

Double Edit: I just noticed my king's dining room has a pic of three burning nobles (keep in mind I'm at 77 dwarves and am pre-making my king's room... I've only gotten the DM so far). I've also noticed a picture of fresh orc corpses in the dining room. I've got to check my engravings more!  :D

I got a laboring dwarfs engraving... named "The useless twig of distraction"

Also, engraved in my sheriff's office is an engraving of a terrified dwarf surrounded by cave spiders. My sheriff detests cave spiders.

And you can't eat them, either, sadly. Even though it'd make sieges so much more fun; dwarves lining the walls, drooling and carrying sharp knives and forks, ready for the upcoming meals.

I just got this:

Code: [Select]
Kuthdenglelum, The Accidental Wane

Engraved on the floor is a masterfully designed image of Nacu Plantpointed the human and Gil Smiledflew the human by Ushat Delerasteb. Nacu plant pointed is cringing. Gil smledflew is laughing. The artwork relates to the smashing of the human Gil Smiledflew's left lower arm by the human Nacu Plantpointed in 105 during Gigolrislu, the Ridded Siege.

Must have been one hilarious accident.

Early on in the engraving, my engraver was obsessed with civics. Every other engraving, aside from images of two squares or something equally boring, related to the foundation of the fortress, or the ascension to leadership of the then-current leader, or was a rendition of the symbol of the local dwarven civs. He was also rather stuck on himself, with innumerable images of a dwarf engraving, which artwork related to masterful engravings he'd made.

Now, though, after we've had a few sieges, things are more interesting. Engravings relate to the mortal wounding of Gobbo No38 by Urist McOrcsmasher at the 3rd attempted abduction, or to the slaying of Elf d'Wussy by Urist McMarksman at the 5th attempted intrusion.

My civ is called The Shield of Triangles. only through my engravings did I find out that the national symbol is a square. Lul'z were had.  :D

.... I caught a snatcher with a child once that way.  Bloody odd having a cage with a thing holding a small cage inside, with a child inside that.
Yo, we heard you liked captives.  So we put a cage in your cage, so you can capture while you're capturing!

a well-designed image of shining suns. the name? "the rosy god-forsaken doom". seems pretty accurate.

"HEY THERE MISTER PLANET! WOULD YA LIKE SOME MORE SUN?"

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

"Engraved on the floor is an exceptionally designed image of Xuspgas Scandalcruel the goblin by Ónul Kirmedtob. Xuspgas Scandalcruel is falling. The artwork relates to the collision of the goblin Xuspgas Scandalcruel with an obstacle in Mirrorrubbed in the midwinter of 208 during The Fourth Attempted Abduction at Mirrorrubbed."
I have tons and tons of cagetraps at the entrance and captured a whole ambush once. I built the cages at the highest Z-level and threw all of them down. It's only fifteen Z-levels, but I plan on increasing the height by digging to the lowest Z-level and then dropping the goblins down there. Maybe, I could get magma down there, just for fun. And glass walls or windows all around, with dwarves standing behind the walls/windows and laughing at the goblin gore rubbing the mirrors of their doom.
Okay, I got a bit carried away there, but it's a hilarious image.

Dig Deeper, I love you.
The best part? The engraving is depicted as ¶, which I look upon as a tree.

I've also got several pictures of 'four freezing caravans'. Mostly awesome due to the fact that I'm in a freezing biome.
