A single dwarf, before being locked into a military career, told his version of the history of Bootlashes (sadly without any "the war dog is tearing up the dwarf" scenes). Guest-starring an engraving about the region's history and an engraving by a migrant from a file I didn't save.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

tl;dr: My dwarves have some serious issues that they should probably sort out one of these days.

Quote
Engraved on the wall is a masterfully designed image of Ubup Oakseduced the orc and Cequova Gulftells the Monstrous Animal of Suicide the elf by {Urist McStoner}. Cequova Gulftells the Monstrous Animal of Suicide is shooting Ubup Oakseduced. The atrwork relates to the shooting of the orc Ubup Oakseduced by the elf Cequova Gulftells the Monstrous Animal of Suicide in Spiderydogs in the Reclusive Crest in 51 during {random siege}.

Okay...

I guess that's a good attitude for an elf to have...

Also, the elf in question has a five-page kill list.

ed- My engraver decided to engrave a masterwork engraving of himself engraving this...  Right next to it. And so on, all the way to the wall. The last one was called, amusingly enough, "The Disgusting Blisters." :o ;D

And I call him Urist McStoner because he's also a legendary mason and stonecrafter.

'Engraved on the wall is a finely designed image of a mule. The mule is burning.'
I was laughing for quite a while at that one, I think it's referring to when the elven caravan was burnt to death when a fire imp went mental at a goblin ambush and the fires spread to my trade depot.

My new embark (after I abandoned an eight year old fortress due to repeated goblin sieges and having no water on the map and things generally going downhill from almost 100 dorfs to 24 plus four nobles) has some interesting goings-on.

I was hoping my engraver would carve the epic rise and fall of Valerelics, but she's more interested in carving pics of her boyfriend hard at work, the current settlement in general, and harassing the trader with pictures of him surrounded by lizards, which terrfiy him.  she carves these in his office, of all places.

Interestingly, they're friends.  Be interesting to see if the grudge I noticed he has is against her boyfriend.

a well-designed image of shining suns. the name? "the rosy god-forsaken doom". seems pretty accurate.

Engraved is a masterful Zon Zaludobuk rendition of a finely designed image of a door.

I've got about 10 of these in one room.  I imagine a confused dwarf walking in and then bumping into walls all over the place trying to get out ;D

Recently I tried to do a fort divided challenge, where you have one fort set up wonderfully below and the migrant waves have to make do with the horrors of being outside.

Anyway, there are a set of floodgates holding my migrants outside. The first migrant engraving was of floodgates, right in a doorway. I felt like he was trying to tell me something. Poor guy.

My first fort had a tantrum spiral after my first few ambushes. During this, one of my dwarves (last name: Lovestone) threw a tantrum and killed several pet dogs. By coincidence, moments later my major was killed by his wife. The guards were on their way to do something about Lovestone when Lovestone became my mayor. Apparently, the guard then decided not to punish him (Lovestone had the "Was glad to have punishment delayed" thought).

Anyway, the engraving. One of the murdered dogs belonged to my legendary engraver. I told him to engrave an entire room that was to be my baron's tomb. He filled about 60% of the room with images of his dog in the fetal position dieing, images of dogs crying out as Lovestone struck them down and engravings of Lovestone laughing as he mortally wounds the dog. He was taken by melancholy a few months later and starved to death while wandering around the noble section of my fort. I know I'm just imposing meaning, but it feels like he was outraged that Lovestone wasn't brought to justice. I made that room his tomb and had his dog's bones taken out of the coffin the dwarves randomly placed them in (deconstructing the coffin) and micromanaged dumping to place the dog's bones in his tomb then forbid the bones so the dwarves wouldn't touch them. I felt better thinking that the dog and her master would rest in peace together. I put Lovestone's coffin in my refuse room.

Those are my favorite engravings because they inspired me to believe a story that probably didn't fully exist in the games programming. It was the first time I actually felt emotion toward a dwarf.

You should have let in at least him.

Why I don't have any engravings... only those related to settling, cooking and The Great Dehydration in 86. Nothing even that can be made into nice story... or I'm not trying hard enough.

Not so much my best, but a more of a wait, what-engraving:

The first is just an obsidian-grey tile, the second a 'W'.

Turns out most of the nobles had the same room. Moreover, this same room was apparently bedroom, office, and dining room. I don't know what they thought was in this room... I do know the doors were all locked, so none of them could get IN.

Also, apparently there was a fire inside, and had been for months. I feel I should investigate this at some point.

I have several engravings of a random human adventurer fighting a cougar and stabbing its eye out / shooting it.

It's pretty cool.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.
