Curiously in my current fort I have 3 legendary engravers and plenty of death, artifacts, and other history... and yet 8 out of 10 engravings will still be of the fort founding or the first mayor's first election.

I'm getting loads of engravings about "The flight of Oddom Taperedrough into the Hideous Hills in the midspring of 201". That was the year my place was reclaimed, but it was no one in my fort.

Is there any way to check legends while my fort is still active?

Go to /data/save, copy and paste your save in the /save folder, start DF, continue playing one of the two saves, abandon and start Legends mode in that save.

I don't remember the name, but it was the mayor at the time surrounded by large roaches.

Checking the mayor and engraver's profiles revealed that the mayor hates roaches (can't blame him) and the engraver had a grudge against him.

Imush deserves a medal for placing this engraving in the entry passage for EVERY elf to see when they come peddling their wares.

Kathilthetust -- "The Wet Purge"
On the wall is a finely-designed image of a dwarf and purring maggots by Dastot Kuletkacoth. The dwarf is surrounded by the purring maggots. The dwarf looks terrified.
History was turned off, and I didn't quite get that art images had historical relevance, so I did a double-take when I read this oddly-specific one; that dwarf was my mayor.

In my latest fortress, in which I just got my first siege ever, there are several images of humans beating down elves, of course, and the tragic death of the fort's first noble defender: Shorast Moistenglazes the Walled Mouth-Conflagration of Decisions, struck down by Bosa Thiefstar the goblin. They missed the part where immediately following this, the bridge extended and a female threw on the plate armor that had been intended for him, grabbed a shortsword from the trading post, and charged the goblins, cutting them all to bits. Shorast's grave has a totem made from the skull of his killer, but unfortunately none of his exploits up to then.

one day, out of f**kin' nowhere, a dwarf was engraving my dining room, and he draws a picture of my current manager, Urdim, and a group of cyclopes.
Urdim is admiring the cyclopes.

The thing is, cyclopes aren't even in his preferences, so this would imply that he used to wander around spying on them before he imigrated...

Cyclopes are neither in the manager's preferences NOR the engraver's? Check both; I'd be interested to know.
