This is masterfully designed image of an elf and a tentacle demon by Urist Beardstake, the elf is cringing, the tentacle demon is laughing.

Bricks were shat.

This is awesome and a very dwarvish thing to do.

Gah, I've had a problem with engravings lately. My Axedwarf held off an entire 10-squad goblin siege with a broken arm while the entire fortress watched from the battlements. Instead of engraving A dwarf surrounded by Goblins. The Dwarf is Striking down the goblins. The goblins are screaming. they engrave A picture of a dwarf. The Dwarf is on fire because a miner fell in a magma channel deep down in the fort, very far away from any engravers BECAUSE THE LAZY BASTARDS ARE HAVING PARTY >:(.

And so, little dwarfling if to mayor you rise
never forget to heed this advice
when it's items outdoors, no matter how small
remember remember to forbid them all.

An image of Dwarves. The Dwarves are working

This may not seem funny at first, but this is placed directly underneath a Baron's tomb. Which is made out of clear glass.

He must be so despised by the common worker that they should force him to look at an image of Dwarves working for all eternity.

Despised?  Methinks you mean beloved.  Barons love watching others work.  It's a staple of nobility that they watch whilst others toil.  I think your dwarves just want the baron to know that the fort shall gone on should his mandates get too annoying.

Alright, this is my best:

"The Fierce Bowels"
Engraved on the wall is a superiorly designed image of a alligator and a human by Zulban Masosathel. The alligator is cringing. The human is laughing.

You guys really ought to turn on the "full history" option in the init file. It would make a lot of these engravings make more sense.

Less obscurity means less laughs! It wouldn't really be funny if we discoer the aligator was actually cringing because the human broke his third toe, left foot.

Okay, so it turns out it's still pretty funny.

EDIT: After reading it over and re-examining the context, it's actually really funny.

Engraved in a line on the wall of the dining room:

Engraved on the wall is a superiorly designed image of a goblin. The goblin is falling.
Engraved on the wall is a finely designed image of a goblin. The goblin is falling.
Engraved on the wall is a superiorly designed image of a goblin. The goblin is falling.
Engraved on the wall is a masterfully designed image of a goblin and a dwarf. The goblin is falling. The dwarf is laughing.

Explaination? I cage goblins when they come, then I send them to The Murder Tower, where they plunge to their grisly deaths. And I laugh.
