Your best engravings
« on: December 01, 2008, 12:57:44 am »

It is almost certain that this has been done before, but, meh. That thread is gone and this one rises in its place!

My favorite engraving is one that completely changed when I saw the title.

It was a picture of a demon striking down a dwarf. Pretty nice, except its engraved in my quiet place, but never mind. It changed, though, when I saw what it was called.

"The amusing coincidence"

What coincidence was so amusing it ended in the death of a dwarf at the hands of a foul demon?

Oh, whoops. That hatch over the demon pit that just opened had my count on it. What an amusing coincidence.

Granted. I was thinking more along the  lines of: I know you. You killed my brother!" "How amusing" Urist has been struck down

"The Odd Recursion"

Engraved on the wall is a masterfully designed image of a dwarf engraving a wall. The engraving is a dwarf engraving a wall. The engraving is a dwarf engraving a wall. The engraving is a dwarf engraving on a wall. The engraving is a dwarf engraving on a wall. The engraving is a dwarf mining out a wall.

It's also an "amusing coincidence" that you happened to make this topic just now, Jackrabbit: I had been hoping for a topic like this one; based on interesting engravings, just a little while before you started the topic. I was also creating and examining new engravings in my fortress at the time.

I have thousands of engravings in my current fortress, but I probably haven't found the very best ones yet. For now, I'll leave you with "The Honesties of Fancying":

Gadan Nefek, "The Honesties of Fancying"

Engraved on the wall is an exceptionally designed image of Cerol Kisswalls the dwarf by Mafol Tulonònul. Cerol Kisswalls is in a fetal position. The artwork relates to the dehydration of the dwarf Cerol Kisswalls in Smouldersmiths in the midsummer of 1092.

I'll let you all draw your own conclusions about that.

On the topic of engravings. I also like them but its so easy to create a clusterfuck of thousand upon thousand of engravings, which spoils the fun of it.
So i was thinking, wouldn't it be more fun if engraving a wall took, say, 10 times as long as it does now? Then a masterful engraving of something spectacular located in a grand engraving hall or noble room or dining room or whatever you want engraved (instead of, in between everywhere) would actually mean something.
Just a thought.

My theory is that he was high when he engraved this. Seriously, why would you engrave bats on the wall. Maybe the bats gave him the grass, or so he thinks...

ahh.... all right.

The Destroyer of Worlds (This was an actual name of one of my engravings)
Engraved on the wall is masterfully designed image of a hoary marmot. The hoary marmot is laughing.

There was also a picture of a dwarf shooting a hoary marmot. I think it may have related to the huge massacre of the local wild-life when I recruited 5 or 6 people for hunting, 'cause we ran out of seeds.

Freaky.
