Ant Colony [CONCEPT]
« on: November 30, 2008, 10:07:21 pm »

Ant Colony, will be a mod for Dwarf Fortress, converting everything into Bug Size.

The reason why I made this thread? Because I need help with suggestions.
Its hard making a replacement insect for dragons. What's a giant green scaled flying fire breathing insect?

Anyways, discuss please, like comments or etc.
Suggestions HIGHLY wanted.

 Giant cave spiders = Cave spiders.

 Boy, am I good.

 But for real, do you have an idea of what bugs will replace which race? We know for sure that dwarves will be ants, and kobolds mosquitoes..

 I'm guessing there will be very few vermin other than mites, fungus and really, REALLY small water organisms.

Actually, Kobolds are fleas.

THeres the black ants (dwarves) and then the RED ANTS! (enemy of dwarves/black ants)

Elves are termites

Humans are bees.

Goblins are wasps.

Bronze Colossus -> Rock 'em Sock 'em Robot.

DO IT.

Also,
Goblins -> Bees
Elves -> Leafcutter ants?
Humans-> Termites

Obviously, you're going to have to change the characteristics of the civilized creatures, they can't just be tiny people.

Oh, and thanks for the rock'em sock'em robot idea :D

And thanks for the guys before too as well.

Elves -> Ladybugs
Kobolds -> fleas
Dwarves -> Ants
Humans -> Termites
Goblins -> Bees

Man, this is such a good idea that I'm going to have to whip up my own mod on it.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Bombardier beetle!
Ok it isn't giant and not sure if any species are green, but it can fly and it shoots an exploding luquid from its abdomen! :o

Flying civs are a bad idea. I think they are buggy as hell.
As for megabeasts, how about a hovering magnifying lens. Or kid with magnifying lens. Then you could include the whole fire breath thing and stick with the theme of ants. I don't really know how ants would take down a magnifying lens in real life though.
As for pets use aphids, as ants do in fact keep aphids as a food source: Article

http://www.cracked.com/article_15816_5-most-horrifying-bugs-in-world.html

Here's how the Japanese hornet treats other insects (and would presumably treat us, if we were small enough). An adult hornet will fly miles to find some squishy shit to feed to its children. Often times, it finds its food in, say, a hive inhabited by thousands of bees.

What to do? Well, Vespa japonica sprays the nest with some of the acid/pheromone and brings in reinforcements, usually consisting of 30 or so fellow hornets. They then descend upon the beehive like an unholy plague of hell-born death engines and proceed to make this world a scary goddamned place. This is maybe 30 wasps against 30,000 bees and the 30,000 bees do not stand a chance.
