Define Kobolds
« on: November 30, 2008, 04:51:47 pm »

I am searching for the Word Of God about what Armokverse Kobolds are like. We know that they are Lowly, that they do not or cannot speak the common tongue. They are shorter than dwarves, and much thinner, and they may be lizardlike or doglike, or perhaps some combination. They don't have access to great technology and steal from the other races, only able to smelt copper. Finally, they live in caves and appear to have learned something about the lore of insects, knowing how to handle dangerous ones and throw them at adventurers.
So, what else is there to know about the mysterious Kobolds?

They eat bones. Thus it seems they are a bit between animalmen and sentient humanoids.

Toady has said he prefers the kobolds that aren't dog like and aren't lizard like but kinda have pointy ears and are vaguely humanoid.

Somewhere in the bloats, actually I think I'll just look through them, and see what I get for kobolds.

Bloats.

#90 Proper kobolds <-Probably the best explantion for kobolds Toady has put up

Reqs, well I'm not sure these are very important, so I'll just skip them.

Anyway from what I can tell, the stories Three toe made, and such etc stuff. A quick run down of what Toady's kobolds are, (bear in mind this is in my opinion).

Are primative somewhat clever lesser beings of the world, that are thought of more as a nusiance to society than something that is actually a threat. Kobolds hold themselfs back from becoming any real society from the fact that most of their technology they can grasp is primative, and the fact that their antics prevent them from getting older, thus wiser.

i thought that they never become any wiser because they have such a crude spoken language, and absolutely no written language.

I'd put those two things on the top of the list of "things a civilization needs to grow and flourish".

How exactly do they even differ from goblins then?

Fancy that, every single race in the game looks like humans. Real creative

To be fair, lots of people use unique creatures in hopes of showing creativity. However, it is the depth beyond what their physical characteristics that show real creativity.

Toady made Elves Cannibalistic and Dwarves greedy insane short people.

Seeing as how before Elves lacked this extra depth, we can expect future updates to include depth-building devices for goblins and kobolds. Possibly even Humans will get some extra fluff.

So yes, there will be differences. Just not terribly physically.

Possibly the most interesting thing that came about is that Goblins and Dwarves are much more similar to eachother then the other races where all the others are pretty alien to them.

Quote from: Toady
To us, a proper kobold is neither a chihuahua man nor a mini-draconian, but instead sort of a small mammaloreptilian humanoid with pointy ears and yellow eyes with a penchant for trickery and mischief, context-based sublanguage, poisonous critter collection, traps and kleptomaniacal hoarding.

That looks like humans?  What, any humanoid with two eyes above a nose above a mouth is too similar?

Physically, kobolds are smaller than goblins, with yellow eyes instead of red, and only three toes.  Other differences will probably become apparent in the next version, which will give us more information about appearances.  There are distinct differences in personality, and drastic differences in culture.

While Toady hasn't made a player race of hovering squid people or some such, I think there are plenty of demonstrations of his creativity in the game and the dev plans.
