Funny side effect of Martial Arts
« on: November 30, 2008, 03:49:43 pm »

Martial Arts doesn't cause bleeding: makes perfect sense.
Hits in the arms and legs don't cause death: makes perfect sense.
Martial artist flinging some 30-odd punches and being completely unable to kill an Engineer because they all hit the arms and legs: priceless.

It should be able to cause internal bleeding.

I let my elite goon squad run around whomping folks with their fists at the shelter last night (it sounded good at the time).  They had no trouble killing anyone until the gang units showed up to spoil my fun.

Still, perhaps melee weapons should automatically hit the body or head if the target is weak (blood=1?  blood<10?).  Surely you can't defend yourself effectively when you've been beaten within an inch of your life.

I'd like the option to incapacitate without killing myself.

Yeah, me too.  Sounds really like a true martial artist... But then again... This people are crazy murderers and torturers so it shouldnt be too weird that the man just beats them to death.
It could be useful for kidnapping though.

Very much so.  I really struggle to kidnap anyone dangerous.  Agents and CCS vigilantes are the hardest to nab since you either have to date them or wound them and drag them to safety before they bleed out.  I seem to succeed with the former at best 1/3 of the time (seriously, the bastards routinely KO a Black Belt with 11 Martial Arts -- WTF?!) and the latter takes enormous amounts of luck since wounded enemies love to flee these days (even when they're alone).

Note:  I specify agents and vigilantes because cops and the like don't seem to be nearly as much trouble when dated.

How about, at high levels of martial arts skills and Juice, allowing (instead of multiple hits) some signature moves instead, that would (if they hit) immediately kill or incapacitate the target?

With some appropriately Liberal names for these moves, of course. A Left Hook, of course, a Tree Hug instead of a Bear Hug... that sort of thing.

Jools, that already happens.

My current leader has 16 in Martial arts, and he will jump kick an enemy, hitting six times in the head for instant death. I love it when he breaks their spine and they drop their weapons. Any hit like that to the arms or legs brings them instantly to nearly death. That's how I managed to kidnap a SWAT Officer. He's also got 12.28 in Tactics currently and dodges about 98% of most attacks. I've gone in and solo ninja slaughtered about 20 police officers at the Courthouse. Of course, one good wing in the arm screws that up pretty good. Of course, when I have Tactics I'll give you an update.

You can get the same *effect* from normal martial arts attacks, yes, but that's not quite what I was suggesting. The above all fits in to the standard attack pattern:

<Name> <attack text> at <enemy name>!
<Name> hits the <randomly targeted bodypart> <hit count>.
(Optional) <Text describing what damage this did to enemy, e.g. teeth loss or death>

What I was suggesting was more along the lines of whole new type of attack:

<Name> attacks <enemy name> with <Signature move name>
<Signature move effect text>
<Text describing what the resulting damage does to the enemy>

So examples would be:

The Green Ninja attacks Police Officer with his Tree Hug!
Police Officer's chest and spine are crushed by the Liberal Power of the Love of Nature!
Police Officer slumps to the floor and dies.

The Green Ninja attacks Eminent Scientist with his Liberal Left Hook!
Eminent Scientist's head is punched clean off by the Liberal Fury behind the blow!
Eminent Scientist's body collapses as the head rolls away into the gutter.

The Green Ninja attacks News Anchor with his Rainbow Kick!
News Anchor is sent flying, hitting a nearby wall with an audible crack as his spine breaks!
News Anchor falls to the floor, paralysed.

The general idea is that this is a new semi-hidden type of powerful insta-hit, insta-kill (or disable, if that's what that signature move does) attack only available to top-level martial artists (and even then, not every attack they make is a signature move - say 1 in 4 or something?). This acts as an incentive to try and level up martial artists (for the powerful attacks) plus hopefully a little more humour can be injected into the fight text, rather than just combat mechanics.

Its just an idea, anyway, and may either be not really suitable for LCS, or too much of an annoyance to code.

You'd need to add the Donkey Punch...

I'd be quite fine with no named attacks, but rather more attacks like dropkicking, etc. I also think if your Martial Arts level is high you should aim for the head and chest more.

I agree you should be able to hit certain targets more with practice; but it would be nice if you could decide which. Personally I like the option of disabling my enemies, in the event I want to beat them up and kidnap them.

Though probably overpowered here it is

Why not using enemies as meat shields against other enemy fire. Effectively a Martial Artist would go up to an enemy and disable him... Then make sure that the enemies cannot fire upon him without hitting their partner or even stear him into enemy fire

Well...it is implemented, in a round-about way. It's why I usually take hostages in a middle of a firefight, to save me from being killed.
