Well they won't work. I think they'll eat your food and drink your booze quite handily, however.

Yes.  But funnily enough, the machine I constructed to allow me to capture carp (And thus start them breeding) ended up draining the bottom half of my river (don't ask me HOW) and killed them all off.

I don't know about friendly goblins, but in the current version I've noticed that tamed snail/slug/tigermen I get/tame all die of thirst eventually. Which makes me sad, as I liked having modded War Tigermen running around my fort.

Though I did have a baroness consort who filled up my well.

Dare I ask how?  She found a bucket nearby or she's really that powerful of a lover?

The problem is the intelligent tag.  It make a creature able to be hungry and thirsty.  Take it out or give them [NO_EAT] and [NO_DRINK]

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.

Elven merchants don't die of thirst, don't they have it?

No, they will die of thirst if they stay long after the "has gone berserk/melancholy/stark raving mad" stage (I have done this several times, needless to say).  The most recent time I saw this, two elves and a cow went melancholy next to a staircase.  They would go up one level, then jump off.  Over and over again.  I had a permanent elf-and-cow-fall until the elves died of thirst.
