I caught some goblins about a year ago during an ambush. As usual I put their cages near the dumping pit. I then forgot about them.

Just now, right after another ambush, I get a message, and a new denizen of my fort:



The baby is currently in the cage with its mother, listed as friendly.
What should I do? I'm considering either chaining it outside, or making it a decoration in my meeting hall.

Has.... anyone ever actually tried letting goblins out to pasture to see if they spore reproduce?   I mean... it works for animals, after you capture one of their kind.   Which is why I have a ton of carp-fry in my river...


And... wouldn't they kill off their children upon birth, if they're friendly to you, and the goblins are hostile to you?

I don't think you'd be able to chain it outside as it's friendly, though you may be able to.  Never had this happen, or even hear of it happening.  Quite an amazing first.

I did that (in 40d), except they were all in a room together. The baby was born as hostile, and killed as soon as it became a child.

The baby will probably end up having more babies via spores with it's mother (if it's a guy) or with invaders (if it's a girl) and you'll eventually have a whole force that will defend you without you ever needing a military.  It'll probably work just like it does with embarking on a town.  The guards there defend you against attackers because they're just defending the town, and you happen to be mooching off of it.

All those invaders are safely in cages, but I have no clue what to do with the two thieves.

Making a copy of the save so I can save scum if necessary, cause I'm going to try some things.

quick update: Either goblins don't like their parents or I have a very beautiful dumping room, cause the baby didn't care when its mother was thrown in.
2nd Update: It is very hard to get goblin baby's out of cages. Someone will release it, it will move a few steps, and then someone shoves it in an empty cage and throws in in a stockpile.

How about changing the duration of goblin childhood (is it in the raws and possible without another worldgen?) and letting the baby goblin grow in a backup save?

It's in the raws and is a creature tag (not an entity tag, which gets frozen at worldgen), so that should work.

This is awesome.  I can't wait to chain up a baby gobbo at the outdoor entrance to my freezing mountain/glacier fort.  At the moment I have a donkey.  It's entire body is bruised from the cold.

This further proves that free range chicken is a bad idea.  I don't want to eat an evil drumstick.
