Build apartment buildings that hang down into a pit, like so:

Code: [Select]

UNDERFLOOR HEATING. this is trickier than you'd expect.

Living goes on this level.
Magma goes in here.
More living.
more magma.

You know what I'm thinking right now?
Necropolis!
Build a separate town for the dead, every dead dwarf gets his own small house. In each house there has to be at least a bed, a table, a chair and a cabinet.
I guess, that's too much to ask, but you could make a necropolis for the nobles. It should really look like a dwarven town, but dead. But then, you'd have to make extremely nice rooms!

Pyramid! Build a pyramid with traps, treasures and more traps for your first expedition leader. He's The Founder of the Metropolis, so make his grave fitting!

I'm going to try and do this one, if I ever find my freaking magma tube.  I'm on a arctic map (freezing mountains, frozen brook, small valley with boreal forest) and have been sympathizing with my poor dwarfs as the weather has gotten colder IRL.

First I have to solve my water shortage though, and find the magma.

As far as mega projects go, I think building a giant central shaft all the way to the surface and down as far as you wish would be cool.  Build your housing around the shaft and give everyone balconies and/or windows.  Make the bottom some sort of public space (Meeting hall, statue garden, etc).  Channel out the top of the shaft and build gemstone windows to provide light.

You could dedicate each floor to a specific industry, with worker housing around the shaft, then dining and other necessities (food & booze stockpile, etc) with the workshops the furthest layer from the center.

I don't think so, unfortunately.

Dunno if anyone has said this but...

Dig the most lower levels out, not completely but so that they look natural rather than cubic, like a huge cavern. Then fill it with water, ergo create a huge undersea. Remember to make some islands there, and if you want, lift up the roof and make huge stalagtites with housing in them.

If you want you could create a dwarven portcity, with harbors and all. Then a huge waterfall falling down from aboveground major river down there.

For extra points, make it all out of a black or dark green stone.
Or, if you're feeling like Egyptian dwarves, make it all out of gold, limestone and lapis lazuli.
