Metropolis ideas?
« on: November 30, 2008, 08:18:12 am »

I'm currently planning to make a huge fort for 500 dorfs and so far, it looks a bit plain. Can anyone suggest ideas for stuff that's really dwarven/cool?

Currently heres what I have: The layered bedrooms have balconies with handrails, the nobility live in a self sufficient castle with magma moat and there is a nice temple district.

your dwarves need "dwarven" enterntainment find some gruesome way to kill off caged baddies in public. Arena etc. Colloseum style.

Waterfalls always keep the people happy and present a challenge to set up right.

Make a truly elaboarte 3-d statue about 10 z levels high or more in the center of your metropolis to armok. Remind them you can crush them whenever you wish muahah.

Anywho 500 dwarfs keep in mind you ll have to tweak the dwarf cap in the raws and still there 500 is alot of Urists your fps will go down down down.

Good thing I got a hard core comp. And the statue is replaced with the temple which I will make sure has lots of blood. And corpses. And a POW prison. And spikes.

Get the idea? :)

How about something with magma?

Well, I recommend watching the movies metropolis (both the black and white 1920's one and the early 2000's anime one) and construct a city off of that design.

And just to make it dwarven: put a roof over it.

first of all, dig a huge cavern , then build all your buildings there.
and some of them on the walls of the cavern.

and you could also build a cultural building: many rooms with statues, many kinds of items, animals.

sewers under every building.

a waterfall is a must.

If you're looking for something ridiculously huge to build, it's just a matter of digging up my old Underworld challenge.  You could have a three-tiered settlement with lots of variation to go around.

if he wants somehting huge , he should dig at least 10 z leves . leave it all empty. and then start building your underground city. some buildings part of huge pillars of rock (like, 1 region tile). but the pillars should look like they were natural. some buildings just constructed. sewer under every building.

and if you want to trade, a ramp tower to allow caravans inside.

Build a giant dragon statue that pumps magma up through its body, up its neck, and can be dumped out of its mouth at the flick of a switch (I reccommend steel bridges for this :) ). This should then be set up overlooking the main entryway, so any invaders, immigrants etc can get incinerated.

Bonus points; make it all out of marble and precious metals, OR make it 2-headed, with the second mouth spewing water. This can be used to either encase things on the ground, or if you want tricky, produce obsidian in mid-air for insta-cave-ins.

I got three quarters of the way through building one of these before I abandoned my fort, and I've regretted deleting my savefile ever since.

Look at ancient (and modern) metropoli from real life (or fantasy) and have your city be inspired by that.

For example, you could have it be like Old Jerusalem, with a labyrinth of intersecting and narrow streets and then a massive temple plaza with homes for the nobles around it. Or like Rome with a huge forum and palace area. Or whatever.

Mid-air obsidian making is horrible unless really well controlled. I had something of the style set up and just for opening the set up I got about 50 cave in's before my dwarves managed to shut it off. And you do get stopped with an alarm for each one of them. Pain. It did although make my volcano spew magma 4 z-levels up and across which was pretty cool.

Put all of the captured baddies and your cats in a single cage, hook it up in your arena, pull the lever, and then unleash your army into the arena, the spectacle will please the onlookers safely one z up in a glass booth.

Libraries, towers, theatres and markets. Temples, cathedrals and churches, entire individual houses. Ponds and gardens. Surround the metropolis with farmland stretching out for miles. Guildhalls and businesses. Fishing warfs would be ideal if you've got a lake or major river... Oh, and a series of earthen catacombs filled with your dead. Maybe a mausoleum. Build a massive city wall around the whole thing. Build an observatory with a massive telescope. It should have four clear/crystal glass windows inside it. Build a clock tower with a ton of moving mechanisms inside it. And build a lava temple thingy. Try and make as much of this stuff as possible aboveground.

carve out the entire mountian and make it hollow, then build a multi stroy human town inside the mountian.

make a liquid delivery system. an entire ceiling of hatches each with its own individual lever, and more levels and an entrance so if obsidian gets caught in the passagways you can mine it out. pull levers to pinpoint where you want what to go to.
