Maybe it's like splenda?
Precisely.  Only the plants make it naturally. and dwarves just extract it.
Sweet pods make splenda?
And Splenda is sugar, just an unorthodoxy different type, like pigeons are related to dove ( the bird version of the 'rat = feral mouse' dispute ) .

Rat =/= feral mouse. For one thing mice aren't necessarily domesticated, so escaped tame mouse = feral mouse (that's what the word 'feral' means). For another they're completely different animals (they differ a lot in size alone) and have distinctly different genetics. Doves are however just a type of pigeon.

Sucralose
(the chief ingredient of Splenda) is a compound chemically distinct from regular table sugar (sucrose) or any other type of sugar really. It is apparently 600 times as sweet as sucrose.

It's amazing what you can find out with just a quick browse of wikipedia.  ;)

Nice, that's why it tastes like cotton candy.

And mice = more benign rats?

Also why do we hate pigeons, they've conquered the world, control the pigeons, conquer the world.

No.  Mice = [abjective] Rat is the same thing as saying Sheep = [abjective] Human.

Mice and rats CAN NOT BREED with one another, unlike breeds of dog (they're all canines) and some species of dragon (*cough*Naomi Novik's).

Well, those critters ARE being bred in much the same manner as dogs, so one probably gives the other.

If I wanted to recreate the world of one of my favorite stories, I should be able to specify that there is a civilization called Groan, ruled by Earls from a castle called Gormanghast.
You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..

Well, those critters ARE being bred in much the same manner as dogs, so one probably gives the other.

Rats:
Kingdom:    Animalia
Phylum:    Chordata
Class:    Mammalia
Order:    Rodentia
Superfamily:    Muroidea
Family:    Muridae
Subfamily:    Murinae
Genus:    Rattus

Mice:
Kingdom:    Animalia
Phylum:    Chordata
Class:    Mammalia
Order:    Rodentia
Superfamily:    Muroidea
Family:    Muridae
Subfamily:    Murinae
Genus:    Mus

As you can see, they're even less related than dogs are to wolves (both of which are Genus Canus and Species: C. lupus).

Ah, yes, in that case I agree, which is why I mentioned them as the NN dragons are listed "by breed" and I'd come to the conclusion that they were "like dogs" in that manner (though clearly more like humans with regards to "controlling ones self" past physical maturity--and we all know how much control THAT is ;)).

What'd be good for juice, erm, cross breeding plants?

Animal blood?
Sugar, syrup, milk, [elf] bone meal?

Well, if we are going to make juice, we're going to need some sort of squeezing device, perhaps similar to a winepress. Then, to make it suitably dwarvish, you should be able to put just about anything in there. THat way you could have kitten juice or elf juice!

Then how do they make dwarven wine?

And is there any chances of cat blood-rinsed elf bone meal tea?
