[40d][Sparring] All dwarves end up Wrestling Champions
« on: November 29, 2008, 11:23:38 pm »

Ok, so I'm playing a 2x2 fort on a mountain/grassland biome.  That shouldn't matter, but I figured I'd mention it.

I've got maybe ten dwarves that were given weapons (random leftover goblin junk) to train with.  They are the whole of my military aside from a cadre of marksdwarves.  I gave them spears, hammers, axes, swords, whatever was left.

Ok, so they go and spar.  Thing is, they level wrestling more than anything else.  Yes, they have the weapons in their inventory, and they gained skill with them occasionally, but usually wrestling.

Eventually, they became champions (of wrestling) and tossed aside their weapons.

What's going on?  Am I missing something here?  Shouldn't they use a weapon if they are assigned that weapon, and thus train in that weapon?

There are lots of problems with sparring, but not many directly related to this that I recall...  is your sparring room small?  I think 1x1s caused this for somebody.  If there are any mods to the dwarf it might also impact their combat decisions.

If they get grabbed by someone else that is practicing wrestling, they essentially begin defending themselves and striking back using the only skill they can up close and personal, that being wrestling.

Barracks is seven by twelve I think.

Arranged so:

I suppose my best guess is that they disarm one another constantly and fight hand to hand, or that they are grappling as the above post suggests.

As an aside, marksdwarves do fine.  They are all marksdwarves, like they are supposed to be.

Also, my guards spar in the barracks, with no weapons and leather armor/shield, if that makes a difference.

Perhaps the guards start wrestling with your weapondwarves, forcing them to use wrestling to defend themselves? If so, perhaps it would be better to give the guards a seperate barracks.

Does dodging an attack train wrestling? if so, that probably combined with the rapid wrestling bug in the latest version.

Can you give different squads different barracks?  I've never heard of that before and didn't think it was possible.

Not sure this is a bug.  I have (had) the same setup on my current fortress: nine leather armored fortress guards training in wrestling, four marksdwarves and five swordsdwarves.  The guards constantly sparred with the swordsdwarves, and all of my swordsdwarves became wrestlers in a short time because of this.

The guards sparred so much that all became champions.  Just had a big siege last night.  Seven of my regular military (full suits of steel plate armor, greaves, etc.; not to mention steel weapons and bolts) were killed, but the guards in cheap dog leather slaughtered 85% of the enemy and broke the siege, taking not a single wound.  First time my fortress guards were ever worth a damn!

(Champions breaking a siege)

Yep, I found that out recently as well.  My guards become champion wrestlers in pretty short order, and holy crap what a difference.

I have a similar problem.  I started off training my military in wrestling/shield use, then forged them some silver warhammers and set them to use those.  Six of them have now reached legendary hammer use, yet the game still registers them as elite wrestlers.  I've checked, and none of them has legendary wrestling, it's all Grand Master or below.

I believe that the wrestling skill does improve with the avoidance of blows in combat, as the wiki says it's used for that, and based on a few experiences with my own dwarves, i.e. 'accomplished' wrestlers sparring with hammers and becoming Elite Wrestlers.

However, a major problem that I've noticed, and which may be contributing, is that some sparring dwarves end up holding items like greaves or backpacks (apparently pulled off opponents) which they seem unable to drop.  This happens even when they're not deliberately wrestling.  They will wrestle instead of using their weapon if they're holding something like that.  (Verified by failure to dabble with held weapon).  The only solution I've found is marking for dumping and waiting.

A possibly related problem is that armed dwarves (i.e. for hunting) will attempt to engrave, engaging a tile, but cannot, and so will stand there trying for a long time.  Haven't had the morbid curiosity to find out if hunger/thirst overrides this.

I'm pretty sure you can assign a barracks to a squad, and then only that squad will use that barracks (both for sleep and sparring? not sure) but I don't have DF on this computer right now and can't check it.

Ahh I finally found where this bug was mentioned.  I've noticed that compared to the 38c release or so, that dwarves level of wrestling much much faster then they should.

I started several new fortresses, had a large barracks with several beds, made copper weapons and had all my dwarves but one equip them and start sparring.   At the end of a year I had 7 legendary wrestlers, which soon turned into champs.

I'll try it again without any wrestlers and see if it improves things as per the suggestions here.  I mostly wanted to confirm that I am seeing this as an actual bug, because some of the prior discussion cast some doubts on it.  Thanks for looking into it!

It's not just dwarves wrestling and grabbing items. Dwarves suck at dressing themselves. Maybe 20-30% of the time, dwarves will pick up a new weapon in the same hand as their shield hand and then be unable to use either.

Or they'll get everything in the correct hand, but nothing ever gets trained when they spar. Equipping and sparring in general right now is incredibly buggy and frustrating. This is one of the biggest areas that needs UI improvement, too.
