Miner refuses to work.
« on: November 29, 2008, 10:25:00 pm »

My legendary miner is refusing to mine. She does any other task, except mining. I am not in an aquifer, nor is the rock wet, or warm. She doesn't appear to be in a strange mood. If she is in a strange mood, how do I find out? Also, she is not unhappy, hungry, or thirsty.

And you can't eat them, either, sadly. Even though it'd make sieges so much more fun; dwarves lining the walls, drooling and carrying sharp knives and forks, ready for the upcoming meals.

About the only thing I see missing on that list is whether you have a pick available for her to work with.

That seems pretty likely, though. Unless you embarked without a pick? I don't think having a starting miner gives them a pick by default.

... also make sure she can reach the rock you have designated.

(Dwarves with a strange mood will flash to exclamation points ['!'] on a regular basis, and it's announced when one starts. It's pretty easy to tell.)

Yeah, a pick is the only thing I can think of.  When did she stop mining?

Also, do your other miners mine?

Double check your designations to ensure they're correct. Often I find my miners arn't mining because I forgot to designate a tile or two that they needed designated to get to work.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Also, if a dwarf can only carry one tool at a time, so if she has both mining and woodcutting enabled then she will only carry the tool for the one. Check to see if this is the case, otherwise I got nothing beyond what everyone else has said.

I'm having a similar problem. While playing around with my dwarves professions my miner became equipped with an Axe. Realising my mistake I removed said axe, but now my miner won't mine or pick up the pick axe.

Is there some way to equip that I don't know of (very likely)? Or should the pick be regained automatically?

Actually, it isn't possible to assign a dwarf to both mining and woodcutting. Whenever you activate one, the other is automatically deactivated, and the dwarf will drop the obsolete tool and pick up the one needed for their new job.

Check to make sure mining is actually enabled, for the above reason.

Also check if she isn't on military duty, if that has any effect.

Problem solved. It was a missing pick. Doesn't explain why she was fine with smoothing walls.

You don't need a pick to smooth or engrave.  Those are stone detailing tasks, not mining, as well.
