I need a good read
« on: November 29, 2008, 06:03:39 pm »

I'd like to read one of those community forts.

unfortunately for me, there are alot of forts to read up on, and my time is finite.

So i ask you populace, which are REALLY good reads? i enjoy pictures and humorous captions and commentary.

things i read currently include mean little men and Marlowe's Fogcrystal: something about domestic so-and-so's.

I've of course already read Boatmurdered in its entirety, so no suggesting that!

any detailed recommendations are appreciated.

I enjoy reading Vaftrudner's stories.

His first:How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Zombie Troll

And his second (which the forum deletion killed):
What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?

They are short, well written and funny. Also they have loads of pictures including some drawn ones...

The Name of the Wind

...isn't a community fort.

I don't see Nist Akath on your list; if you haven't read that, it's a must.  I've been reading Migrursut lately, and it's been well worth the time so far.

Both of those are quite long, and take some liberties with the game for the sake of plot, but they have pictures, humor, and mysterious happenings.

For something completely different, Catfortress the Fortress of Cats.

I guess I should start one now...

Killingabill 1053: It was a harsh journy but our destination to the paradise mountains of peace and happyness have finally arived. News of honeydew falling from the sky and rivers of golden honey are whispered from afar

Killingabill 1054: We have unfortunately died from overexposure to sugar as well as plenty of honeydew pelting accidents

I will join you...

Once upon a time in land very far away there was a *insert generic story here*. In the end they all lived happily ever after.

I must also join this pointless and vaugley annoying endeavor!

1st Granite

We have embarked  from the mountainhomes to fierydeath, our new fortress site. We also brought about 30 dozen cats. Both of these facts are cause for concern but we shall prevail!

1st Granite, later

By Armok! the moment we arrived our cats burst into flame! Urist has been playing around with the raws again! WE ARE DOOMED!  NO! IT BUR-(the rest of the journal is illegible. You put it down and back away slowly, taking care not to look at the charred black corpses. You leave, scarred forever)

Watership down. Best settlement story ever. With rabbits.

But for actual DF fun, I would suggest only one thread.

Bah!  You people have no sense of humor.

*Ponders what would be neccessary to mod DF raw files to the extent that the events of Temeraire could be acted out.*

I agree, these are really great.  his writing style is great, the dwarfs and dialogue are hillarious.

I also enjoy Tale of a Sensible Dwarf (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=19267.0) which is well developed but unfinished, the characters are very well written and the plot is focused and not meandering like many stories.

Also, One Dwarf Against the World (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=15572.0) is mandatory reading.  this is why "urist" is a common generic name for dwarfs on the forum.  it features a psychotic hermit dwarf building a deathtrap for anyone who comes and visits.  well done images and superb writing.

finally, there is already a stickied thread (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=19294.0) that we should be contributing to instead of this.  at least i think its stickied, its title is in bold and it always seems to be at the top when i look.
