Swordsman suffocating in middle of combat?
« on: November 29, 2008, 02:42:21 pm »

EY.....

Exactly what the title entails. One of my swordsmandwarf, when sparring, suffocated to death without me witnessing it. The person who he was sparring with says "Took joy in slaughter recently."

I dont know whats happening!

Sparring accident.  It's likely that some one with a spear pierced his lung while sparring.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.

I think dwarves, being ever-so-slightly mean that way, take joy in any slaughter.

I know my dwarves like to make many, many engravings of sparring accidents. It saddens me.

This is Dwarf Fortress, a masterly crafted game. It is adorned with bands of epic, and is studded with spikes of awesome. On the game is an image of a toad and many dwarves. The dwarves are worshipping the toad. The toad is laughing. The dwarves are dying.

Normal dwarves hate it when they have to fight or kill something.  Soldiers and hunters usually develop the "Doesn't care about anything anymore" or "Took joy in slaughter" to reflect the change in personality brought on by these professions.  So soldiers get a happy thought from killing, while civilians would get a negative thought from the same encounter.

Sparring accident.  It's likely that some one with a spear pierced his lung while sparring.

This.  Untrained dwarves who are weapon sparring are very, very, very likely to get into an accident.  If they're sparring with pointy bits, like swords or spears, that accident is very likely to be one of their lungs.

I always train up to legendary wrestler first, because this is said to help defense, and also gives them a chance to train up their shield and armor usage, before giving them a weapon.

Or maybe the swordsdwarf suffocated because Magua told his lungs they were "an accident" and the resulting depression made them give up on breathing.

Said to help defense? It does! It A) improves their stats making them tougher and more likely to survive an accident, but more importantly B) increases their dodging ability, which can only be done via training in wrestling.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

Yup. As long as you don't mind having a whole bunch of "wrestlers" running around with weapons, train up wrestling first. It's too bad that it's real hard to separate out sparring by weapon types.

Death by suffocation generally occurs more quickly than death by bleeding, unless the heart or nearby major arteries are hit by the weapon at the same time as the lung.

Keeping wooden weapons for them to spar with also seems to help prevent accidents. In my experience at least.

Contrary to Magua's tactic, I never train my guys in wrestling because it seems that they never go back to weapon-using afterwards.

Also, it was probably his throat getting slashed out.

On average wrestling is the "safest" hand to hand combat sparring weapon. Sure crossbows are the ultimate safest weapon for the user but it only works at distances. If you want to reduce mortal or permanenet accidents when using weapons try getting your hands on wodden elve weapons or forge some silver weapons. Set your dwarves to 2 weapons and they'll grab a silver one for sparring and whatever is next best for actual fighting. I find it reduces mortality and I generaly try to stick to things like hammers and maces rather then pointy things like swords and spears.

I still get pissed off when legendary wrestler whatever gets brain or neck damage whilst training is destined weapon as he stops sparring but whatever you do this sort of damage is pretty much inevitable.

One thing I noticed though is that i often get people from my royal or fortress guards sparring with the big boy champions. It is ridiculously dangerous for these fools is there any way besdies making them marskdwarves to save their nervous system from permanenet damage?

When I feel like pampering my military, I train wrestler->sword->axe->hammer->mace->spear->crossbow.

Never had a problem, except with crossbow, which tends to be because they end up with armor in their hands.  Exception being made for dwarves who get nerve injuries, who just go either straight to crossbow, or to their death, depending.
