I don't like to call it "doctor", it sounds way too modern...

Chirugeon?
Bonesetter?
Witch?

What is the problem with "cleric"? That is a "healing class"...but again I am an AD&D fan.  ;D
...hm actually bonesetter sounds good, especially in a gameworld what DF has.  8)

The problem with "cleric" is that it implies that the healing comes about through the intervention of a god rather than through the medical skills of the dwarf in question. (And personally I think that bonesetter, chirurgeon or even doctor are all much cooler).

Hm that is a good point....allright, I vote for bonesetter.  :D

Hmm... I have to agree with some previous posters, in my opinion wanderlust or questing doesn't fit dwarves. It would be the perfect way for making, say humans, stand out as playable race though.

My perception of dwarves may be a bit warhammer-ish, but I feel that harboring a grudge would be more dwarven for the military dwarf.

"Urist McDwarf demands justice!"
"A dwarven warband has embarked for Spikenails, the dark fortress!"

Basically a dwarf gets fed up with his/her friends dying in the hands of <insertrace/animal> and instigates a group of other dwarfs to join him/her on a "crusade" on the hated foe. So player has a few moments to organize the group and arm them, or they'll leave naked (crusade of children style...).

They might come back with spoils of war and stories to tell. Or then nobody will live to tell the tale.

Naturally this would require some of the reqs of the army arc as well.

I'm not sure I like that as a mood, but it definitely fits the 'dwarves do things and you scurry to keep up' feel of the more memorable parts of the game.

Id personally stick to Healer or Surgeon

Doesn't seem very different from the Quest method, except for being even more different from moods in that you don't get the chance to provide the necessary materials.

What you're saying is that we have questing, and races vary as to motivation. So Men (and Kenders) stereotypically quest for wanderlust while dwarves quest for vengeance, grudge and saga animosity. Sure, I can buy this. It is a good shared, mechanics but with individual flavour.

However, I don't think dwarves must only be limited to go for immediate vengeance, they could carry generational grudges, have saga animosity, and also quest for ancestral duty.

I don't think Dwarf Fortress will fall prey to Eternal Hobbitness (Which in EVERY game entirely ignores this all together) I don't think there will be a "I hate adventuring" Civilisation where no adventurers will pop out of.

How about it could say, Urist mcchampion is very restless! or Urist mcchapion demands justice! like when they get into there moods now. I mean there could be multiple moods.

The terms are old, they just didn't always mean 'someone who could reliably do good things for your health' in the past.

Heroic doses of mercury and all that (finally a use for all that cinnabar!!!)

I'd more like that they would come back with a nickname, 324 kills, and legendary skills. If they would bring items, that should be masterful at most, because who had made the artifact?

Otherwise I strongly approve this suggestion!
Obviously artifacts are going to be made elsewhere at some point.
Thus our military dwarves should get the urge to go and steal em: Fey mood.

There seems to be a general consensus on approving strange moods (1) specific to professions in general and (2) military dwarves in particular. Also, the favoured flavour seems to be questing, which may result in a dead dwarf or one returning with skills and artefacts. The risk is also nicely symmetric to normal strange moods where you can lose your dwarf to madness if you can't provide what he needs (shells) - if you have decent equipment he or they can grab their chances improve.

Also, it begs the question, what strange moods would wizards have? (Please don't reply "wait for the magic arc").
