In my opinion, moods should always result in some form of crafting.

Too limited. A "strange mood" is just that, a strange mood. The way in which it is strange should be somewhat random, either totally random or in relation to the dwarf's tendencies/proclivities.

Possible Strange Moods
* Artefact making mood: Current fey mode, atm totally random.
* Profession-related artefact making mood: Inspired by his profession, the dwarf makes a related artefact (weapon, armour etc)
* Wanderlust: Taking a journey, could result in a cmbination of skills and objects
* Quest: Like wanderlust, but for a specific goal (object or entity)
* Martial Trance: Affects military dwarves in a non-trivial conflict

If I wanted to recreate the world of one of my favorite stories, I should be able to specify that there is a civilization called Groan, ruled by Earls from a castle called Gormanghast.
You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..

I think that military dwarves should create their own fighting style. If they're a wrestler they create a marcial arts skill. If they have a sword they create a new fighting style. It could be a skill, they could be legendary at it, and train other dwarves to use it. Wouldn't that be awesome?

And then we'd have a load of useless artifact crafts and we wouldn't be able to get artifact armor and weapons because crafters can't make those.

The logical thing for me would be for a military dwarf (one who's highest skill is combat related) to gain in that military skill.  Call it "Amazing new parry techniques" or something but it would basically be an enhancement to a military skill rather then an artifact.  As all moods have a chance of failure if something is not supplied to the dwarf in question the military mood should follow the same logic and have a requirement to fulfill the mood without which failure results.  The simplest requirement I can think of is the dwarf must get a 'kill' using the appropriate weapon of their highest skill.  Like other moods control of the dwarf is lost, they break out of whatever squad they are part of and become a 'rogue' squad, they procure their desired weapon and other things equipment by confiscation and relentlessly move towards and attack any invaders.  Possibly they get some large combat bonuses to give them a chance to survive this blood lust such as temporary immunity to pain and fear.  If getting an artifact from a mood is considered mandatory I guess they could rip the head and spine out of their kill and immediately create a totem/trophy from it to commemorate their success.

This is by far the most Dwarven way to give military dwarfs a mood.

I fully agree with this interpretation.

This is a masterfully crafted bloody stab wound. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with bands of blood. It menaces with spike of blood.

Crafting as in 'item creation', not crafting as in 'carving bone, wood, or stone'.  I think Granite is advocating keeping dwarven Moods basically the way they are now, with the focus on the creation of an Artifact, while potentially adding other types of Mood for other creatures.  Not limiting Artifacts to rings and idols and such.

The debate really reduces to deeper questions about dwarven nature and the cause of Moods.  To me, strange moods seem firmly linked with the dwarven focus on the skillful production of quality items.  Removing the 'creation' aspect of it just doesn't seem fitting.  Perhaps once styles/schools of combat are implemented, a soldier's mood could result in the formation of a new fighting style.

But this is purely my opinion, of course.  I'm entirely in favor of multiple types of Mood, which can be given to creatures in the raws.

Humorous thoughts this thread gave me:

Training dwarves as a mood? I imagine a military dwarf grab another like one would an item component and darg him to the barracks to learn...

You see Urist McRecruit the Legenday Swordsdwarf. All craftwarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with bands of platemail. It menaces with spikes of sword.

What about doctors? Toady said that medical care will be a skill in the future, right? Should they get fey moods?

What if, when a military dwarf got a strange mood, they went out into the world for a month or two, like suggested. They would take only what they were holding at the time (if they had no weapon, they would pick whichever one they had most training with). Then, they went to a town belonging to one of your enemies (most likely a goblin fortress, but also an elven or human town if you happened to be at war with them). They would attack the town and kill as many people as they could, then move on to the next town, and continue until they kill a preset amount of people. Since they're attacking enemy towns, and not just crafting, they would have a chance of never coming back. Any soldier could get a strange mood, but the lower skill they are when they leave, the less chance they have of coming back, so a champion would almost be guaranteed to survive, whereas there would be a good chance for a recruit to die at some point. If they did come back, the weapon they took with them would now be an artifact, and the dwarf would become hero rank with said weapon. That way, the dwarf would earn an artifact weapon because of his valor and skill, rather than crafting ability.

Personally to go along with this suggestion I would love to see you being attacked by Strange mooded enemies who are so empowered by their mood (which would be like a Martial Stance on Steroids that became enraged). It would be an awsome alternative to Megabeasts and Enemy Adventurers!

It would be like being attacked by Xena!

Military dwarves' fay mood could be wanderlust, and they bringing back artefact weapons or armour would be fantastic. Strongly seconded.

Yep, I agree. That would be awesome indeed.  8)

Take 10 or so of those, set them on fire, and they might actually start to be a slight challenge for Captain Ironblood.

The problem with 'off-map quest' is that the player has absolutely no challenge for the player, a normal mood presents the player with a challenge of getting materials in a limited time and rewards you for having stowed away some gems and meta bars aka PLANNING and PREPARATION.  The off map event just boils down to 'loose a dwarf' and 'maybe get a reward if the RNG gods smile on you' their nothing for the player to do but curse and pray.
