The problem with 'off-map quest' is that the player has absolutely no challenge for the player, a normal mood presents the player with a challenge of getting materials in a limited time and rewards you for having stowed away some gems and meta bars aka PLANNING and PREPARATION.  The off map event just boils down to 'loose a dwarf' and 'maybe get a reward if the RNG gods smile on you' their nothing for the player to do but curse and pray.

Perhaps it should be made so you can prepare your dwarfs before hand. That way, you'd be rewarded for saving a high-quality sword, shield, and armor with a higher chance of success. Or you could give them crappy weapons and armor so you don't have to worry about losing your better stuff.
That still isn't much of a challenge. Not that I can think of anything better...
Normal strange moods aren't very hard...

I don't like to call it "doctor", it sounds way too modern...

Witch?

What is the problem with "cleric"? That is a "healing class"...but again I am an AD&D fan.  ;D
...hm actually bonesetter sounds good, especially in a gameworld what DF has.  8)

I've always liked Chirugeon, but I think "bonesetter" works better for dwarves. Of course, like all professions it'll be namable in the civ's raw files, so we can have different names depending on the race/civ.

A little more on topic, I think a basic decision needs to be made about what to do with "moods" for non-crafting classes. In my opinion, the game should be consistant in how it handles moods, so if Military dwarves get something different from crafters, other non-crafting professions should do the same.

The options so far seem to boil down to:
1) Make something anyway (which is what currently happens)
2) Don't let them get strange moods
3) Let them do something profession appropriate (new techniques or whatnot)

Maybe we should do a poll to decide which option is most preferred?

I figure that if a surgeon goes into a mood he should get a little... overzealous. To the point of physically dragging a random dwarf into his office and performing gruesome and highly unnecessary operations on the poor bastard.

Urist McDwarf wakes up with three arms and a sexchange.

Also, with a very pretty nose.

As for Mephansteras' suggestion, above, I'm for both #1 and #3, that is, it is randomised for they get a normal or martial ("profession related") fey mood.

To sum up, good suggestions for martial fey moods so far has been wanderlust (gone adventuring) and questing, (gone on a murder spree for great justice); forging a nice killing-related artefact; going into a really groovy martial trance during a massive battle; and creating his own martial technique/school (which perhaps could be taugh in the University Arc). A warrior's fell and morbid moods would be interesting too.

*Note: This is a real suggestion and not just a bad joke... Spherical lands should be capable of influencing those upon it*

Sorry to go off topic, but I can't figure out what's going on here.

Are you talking about planets?  Why would planets have to wait for the magic arc?  And what do you mean by influence those upon them?

More along the lines of current moods? Artifact equipment could be randomly generated out of as many item bits as the soldier demanded equipment pieces.

Oh. God. Rereading my little spiel on doctors has given me the most frightening thought of the day: nobles making medical mandates.

Noble McBastard mandates three sex change operations by the end of the season. Noble McBastard mandates a rhesus macaque be grafted to one dwarf's face. Noble McBastard mandates... *room fills up with magma*

There are currently Evil and Good lands... They will soon be ousted, or rather removed, for "Spherical Lands" which are lands that contain domains (known as Spheres) so to speak such as "Fire" causing odd lands where trees sing and rivers flow with blood.

When will this happen? They are currently in the "What's comming next"!

Someone should probably make a topic about what to call it... then again I am sure once it is in the game its name will be a bit more obvious.

Also: Sex change opperations? Beyond spying I don't see why they would want it... Well I guess if you wanted babies but only had two males.

Seriously though, I like the idea of  warrior demanding particular amounts of armor/weapons/shields and leaving for a short time to go on a "Quest" that turns them into a champion. In fact, I like that idea so much I almost feel that legendary weapon skills and champion status should only go to dwarves who undergo such a quest.
 
After all, if all they did was train for wrestling in the barracks for four years, without ever touching an enemy... how are they legendary?

^^^ He means lands influenced by DF's religious spheres.  Spheres are sort of the specialties of gods and "regional forces" (think "the soul of the forest"), like Zeus being the god of lightning, Hephaestus the god of smithing, etc.

# Core96, GENERALIZED CURSES AND OTHER ALTERATIONS, (Future): "Zombie" and "Skeleton" modified creatures aren't really satisfying right now, since zombies, ghosts, and so on gain some of their interest from the details surrounding the transformation and the particulars of the creature so transformed. Generalized curses and sphere-based alterations could vary from world to world and involve all sorts of changes to creatures (and other objects). Requires Core92.

The problem with "cleric" is that it implies that the healing comes about through the intervention of a god rather than through the medical skills of the dwarf in question. (And personally I think that bonesetter, chirurgeon or even doctor are all much cooler).
