Fleeing while outside

When outside, dwarves should attempt to flee to underground/inside vs. just running aimlessly (which often forces them to have to re-encounter the thing that made them flee in the first place).

Tough problem. What if the direction to the inside happens to be straight through the offending being?

Perhaps keep X distance from hostile creatures while running inside? Circle around them?

Given that I've watched dwarves flee from enemies AWAY from the entrance THROUGH said enemies....

Have them flee towards the nearest meeting area would be the best solution, and would probably remove the annoying 'run through the 40 goblins to hide in the wilderness with the skeletal giant eagles' problem too.
