Who dreams of Massive!!! (2450x2450+++!!!) DF Worlds?
« on: November 28, 2008, 10:45:58 am »

I know that it is unrealistic with the hardware complications but who else here dreams of Dwarf Fortress worlds MANY times the size, population, and variety of the current set up? A world where traveling the world map still would take a long time to get from one send of the earth to the other even without the lag.

A World where you could make 50 different species and each of them have a chance of actually having a successful kingdom in one world.

A world where you as an adventurer could slay beasts night and day and not dent the world population.

Believe it or not, I still feel that the "Massive" size world is in fact small and tiny.

Ohhh I can dream... though it isn't really going to happen. The closest we will have is "Planes", but that is a V2 arc... and even then it will probably be one of the later V2 arcs since it will require the worlds to better adapt to the odd changes you make to it (So your fireworld is a fireworld and not just a firey empty world)

I did the math and the current largest worlds are roughly 100 miles on each end. Sounds like a lot until you look at it on a map.

Yeah, 100 miles isn't even enough to get halfway to Chicago (Illinois) from where I live.
Or a tenth of the way to Florida.

hmm if 256x256 is the size of hte Dwarf Fortress world is in fact 100 miles by 100 miles...

Then to get Dwarf Fortress the size of earth would be 1,280,000,000 by 1,280,000,000

Which would be awsome but insanely impossible.

Well the largest worlds are only from one edge of the arctic or antarctic circle to an undefined distance south or north from that, and an undefined distance east or west.

How did you do the math? Who's to say how big a square is?

Who's to say how big a square is?
I am.

That is to say, I calculated the volume of water that 1/7 of one tile contains by basing it on the amount that would support a dwarf for a month. It is understood that multiple trips to get water are abstracted into one for gameplay purposes. knowing the exact number of gallons in this, based on the fact that dwarves are about as massive as a human, if shorter, I used real numbers to calculate the total volume of one square. Since I knew a tile would have to be tall enough for at a human to comfortably stand in, and looking for a footprint size that worked well for this,  calculated that it is 6.25 feet tall, and that the square of 2.5 would give the number of cubic feet in a square, as well as being appropriate for the amount of tile occupancy we normally see. Though, of course, it is possible to fit several dragons in one tile, it is also possible to obliterate matter by putting it under a bridge. I file any remaining discrepancies under "features not yet implemented" such as multi-tile creatures and vanishing bridges.

So, a tile is 2.5 feet on each side, and there are so many tiles in each local square, and so many local squares in a world tile, and so many world tiles in a world. Thus, I came up with 98.something miles, rounded up conveniently to 100.

Now you know why nobody mentions tile sizes while I'm around...

Even if you don't accept that the largest world is at least 2 weeks long.

2mph, 10 hours of travel a day, 140x2

It would make the world 280 miles long

Still Tiny

ok so this calcul is based on "how much a dwarf drink par month" :D so you actually really know dwarves so put in the 2,5 feet squere an elephant that is real and it fits in a squere ...
however wont actualy put this tread on OFF topic so sorry (many threads discussing squere size but none have found a way to determinate it.)
for the topic, i think the problem with that massive worlds that you will have to wait too many times to creating them, then they will lagg for what? many space you won't ever look at, ...

Well...1/7 of water is 10 units of water.

I wish I could make booze swimming pools. Also, Dwarven rum is pink.

That has to be the most convoluted way to discover the size of a tile ever.

That's always the most fun way, I think. I once figured out how many words of opinion "two cents" would get you, based upon the idea that a picture is worth 1000 words, and then determining how much it would cost to buy film, take 1 picture and have it developed.

I came up with 30. Obviously this would vary. And digital cameras change things completely.

Well...1/7 of water is 10 units of water.
This is true, but when a dwarf drinks from a pool, they consume an entire 1/7 of water. Buckets of water for the wounded are consumed whole.
Also, while elephants do fit in one 2.5x2.5ft square, this may likely change in the future, as Toady One has mentioned Multi-tile creatures from time to time.

BUT, yes, I don't wish to drive this any further off-topic.

I do agree that maps should be larger. Hopefully, even villages will be replaced with real human cities! for one thing, give each family a house! With separate rooms! and fences! and Farms! Let's see little roadside taverns in the wilderness, and have more complex terrain, with things like canyons and mesas and all those wonderful things.

supercomputer fortress mode: don't pick a size for your fortress, just a location, the size is the entire world, forests, mountains, oceans, tundra, deserts, towns, fortresses, etc. :)

I still like to use the speach of the Dwarf Fortress characters in Adventure mode to discover how large the world is :D
