Scorpion Farm
« on: November 27, 2008, 02:02:08 pm »

Sooo, I generated this desert world and I'm playing on a spot with no water and trees -- was quite the challenge in the first few years -- but it works out pretty well now.

I decided to make a Giant Desert Scorpion farm on a z-level and have already caught a female that wandered in my map a few times. Is there any way to know if another one will stop by? Is it random? Is it predetermined?

Is there a way to artificially "spawn" another one (not to my knowledge) in case all other means fail?

Oh, there are no elves unfortunately on the world, and the female wasn't pregnant already :(

Do I have any chances with it?

More GDS will wander on eventually. They are a fairly rare large predator, though, so you might have to wait a bit.

You may be able to hurry them up by hunting and killing the other large predators on the map, since only one large predator cluster will spawn at a time.

I've embarked on a 2x2 location, on a desert WORLD, so the only things wandering in my local area is either one-humped or two-humped packs of camels ^^

Only other animals I've met was this GDS and a Giant Eagle that comes by every now and then.

Also, in this world, GDS's don't seem too rare, the pops log states 8622 giant desert scorpions :) On a medium.

So I guess I'll have to wait?

They don't even need to be able to reach eachother to breed though. Creatures will multiply just fine as long as they exist in the same area.

Yep, I know that :) Better be tame by the time she gives birth to younglings ;p

Also, when do the flocks/predators on my local area move out/in. I guess it's on season change?

Actually, if you keep her untamed you could tame one of her female offspring instead and thus have a source of untamed GDSs for a goblin arena. Untamed predators are way more aggressive than tamed ones.

That's indeed a great idea :)
Thanks for the suggestion -- although I'll have to figure out a door/trap system to capture the younglings in cages in order to tame. Yay, even more challenge :)

Just fill a hallway with cage traps and a sacrificial kitten at the end. They should charge into the traps once the door/gate is opened. You can pit the hostiles in the arena afterwards and put aside the tame breeding stock

Constructions ( and natural ones too ) are indestructible, here is another question, is it BD 1 or 2?

Good, they aren't destructomaniacs, this means this'll be a good build.

In the above post, I don't see a [CHILD] tag! Double checked it, there is indeed none. That means GDS's can't reproduce? :(

I guess it only means there is no standard age the youngs turn into adults and neither do they have a special name?

Nope, it really means they can't breed... Same goes for the GCS.

You should be able to add the tag, but I don't know if you will have to create a new world to force it being taken into account
