Idea: Writing workshop
« on: November 26, 2008, 03:36:14 am »

Good evening (or very early morning) folks.

I am Jamini, author of the (somewhat semi-)successful community forts "The last dwarves in the world: Ulolgeshud", "Ulengoddom : The First Dwarven Democracy.", and "Stories of Terror and Energy: Kobold Fortress", and a participant in the Second Battle of the Gods RP.

My time in the community games section of the forums (and the community forts before this section was created) is fairly extensive, and I have a particular love for the English language. The two main things that drew me most strongly to DF were the extremely cooperative and helpful community, and Nist Akath.  I wouldn't have stayed to explore the forums much without the former, and I would not have stayed on much longer than that without the latter.

However, ever since the creation of the Community Games forum I've noticed a slight, but ever increasing, decrease in the quality of the written works here. Where before when a community game pretty much always had the equivalent of two to three soft-cover book pages worth of writing as an intro, as well as pictures, now all too often you find that an intro post consists of little more than, "I am planning to do a community fort. Here is the location. :picture: you know the drill."

While I'm not necessarily saying this is wrong, it certainly is disturbing. While the upper and middle tier quality of the works on this site have remained relitivly (and fortunatly) fairly static. The average quality of works, when you compare the number of written stories to the number of good/excellent stories has fallen considerably. This causes the main page of the community games section to become cluttered and clogged with new and fledgling stories, not only dilluting the entire pool of skill that exists currently, but also driving the higher-quality works away from the front page.

This is why I am suggesting this: A thread where people of any background, with writing of any type (including professional, if you so choose, although I do not recommend it!), can post their works and have it reviewed and critiqued relatively anonymously.

I believe such a place has the potential to improve the overall quality of the works on this site that we all enjoy spending our time at. Potentially bringing up (or out) the great writers among us who need a push in the right direction, and improving the ability of all of us as a whole.

What are your thoughts?

A more direct alternative might be for readers to just critique the community forts they're interested in. Some people don't WANT to be reviewed though, so those who do could just add a standard "Writing critique welcome!" tag at the start or something. Posting samples in a single thread would probably end up with more reviews though (since those willing to do so would be looking in one place) and people could pick up tips from others, so, I'd lend my support to such an endeavor.

The idea behind the workshop is to improve the writing of the participants, not too critique community forts. Ideally people would bring works from all over, short stories that they are working on, peices of novels, diary entries, etc. Obviously parts of community forts will probably end up involved, but that's not the focus.

I think this is a very nice idea. I read so many poorly detailed community forts and then after three or four posts the author always asks why there is no input. I think not everyone will want to be critiqued and that is perfectly understandable.

I'm writing my story/community fort because ever since playing DF I've had a story or three I've had in mind that I wanted to tell. It's also great writing practice for later and I would welcome the opportunity to receive ideas, tips, comments, criticicsm, etc. If I want a literary thrashing I'll ask my wife to read through it.  ;)

If anyone feels up to it then, or is already a reader of Dorenemal feel free to comment away. A link to it is provided below.

I'd also like to suggest a format for comments, etc. otherwise chaos will quickly descend like the Zombie Giant Eagle.

When you comment simply write:

About: (Story, fort, etc. name here)
Author: (Author name here)

Your name will be on your post of course so it's not needed.

Of course, if you want them to be annonomous critiques, you could PM me, and I'll post them here. Don't worry, I'll keep it a secret if you feel like calling someone a bad writter.

If anyone critiquies my spelling, I'll be very angry.

I think this is could be a force of good on these forums, and as such would like to volunteer a writing sample of my own to start off the critique.

This is a short bit that takes place in a fantasy world that I've been developing for a few years.  Don't be afraid of hurting my feelings with critiques, but try to be constructive.

In response to Vactor's story:

A couple of things really struck me that I thought could be improved.  First, you overuse the word 'energy.'  Try finding synonyms, it's a little grating to see the same word over and over again in quick succession.  Second, the first sentence of the last paragraph is a bit awkward.  It consists of several independent clauses linked by commas, and the end result is somewhat halting and unwieldy.  I might rephrase it as something like:

"As one of the cords made contact with his upraised hand, he felt a suction of energy and his hand began to burn.  He desperately tried to control the energy, recklessly handling it in its pure form as it coursed through his body."

Essentially, add conjunctions and periods to give it more rhythm.  Finally, in the fifth paragraph, "pouring" should be "poring."

I think the best thing about this piece is your descriptions.  I could really see all of the things in your story, especially the vovoxes, and that made it an enjoyable read for me.

Requesting critique. I haven't added to it in about a week. I've been away with the Faeries.

I think that this thread is worth reviving.

Anyone want to cut up my current foray into storying up?

Time to bump this thread. I found an old story I had done for a school project, and thought I'd put it up here for y'all to critique.

I like this idea quite a bit, both because I like reading well-written stories and because I'd like to improve my own writing. As such, I'll submit my fortress at http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=28540.0 for critique.

Nobody wants to read several retellings of seven dwarves starting a fortress?  The problem with reviewing succession/community game writing is that, especially for the introduction, they're all just (increasingly minute) variations on the exact same story.
