What screen set-up do you use?
« on: November 26, 2008, 01:42:15 am »

If you're not sure what I'm talking about, it's the view options that you cycle through with the tab key.

I usually use Environment + Commands. Can someone explain the usefullness of the minimap? It doesn't really tell me anything.

I memorized all the commands long ago, and I only use the minimap when I first embark on a site because its helpful in getting a basic lay of the land.  After that I find it to be completely useless.

I use the minimap when I want to find where I have dug on a level.  Since designations show up as brown and dug out areas show up as being dug out, I can generally find tunnels I have already dug.  Since I can normally do the same by just finding the center of my fort and going down, I generally don't use the minimap.  I keep commands up so when I 'q' or 'k' or whatever, my screen doesn't change size.

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.

A lot of the time I use environment + minimap. Not only does it help you to quickly get a picture of the area but it's easy to locate the immediate threats in the form of wild animals with the minimap. As the fortress grows bigger, I learn to know the area and the wilderness isn't as much of a threat I usually stop using the map though.

Chalk me up for Mini map only.  ... I mean, enviroment and mini map only.  The map just feels too long otherwise.

I use environment + minimap when first embarking, but after that environment + commands only. "I keep commands up so when I 'q' or 'k' or whatever, my screen doesn't change size."

I memorized the commands long ago, but I keep the minimap around to warn me of potentially dangerous critters coming my way.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I keep the commands up to avoid stretching the environment when I go to look or view something.

Yeah, I need the commands, even though I've had DF for about a year, the HUD is going to change soon, so I decided, don't screw up before the major overhaul.

Environment only, map for finding enemies/scouting the terrain.

It also helps that I have the screen size set to 1280x816. :D

I'll keep the commands panel if my fortress is particularly close to the right edge of the map.
