what do I need to be able to build kobold quest? I am trying to see if there's anything I can do to ease CPU usage between turns.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Unofficial slogan of Bay 12 Games.

Huh?

Are you saying I'm in the wrong subforum? I'm pretty sure this is the forum for their ascii games that are not dwarf fortress.

He's right. This is the right forum for discussing that game.

LCS just hijacked it. I think LCS needs it's own forum.

But even then, Kobold Quest is a 'modification' of DF. It's not a Curses game at all.

I heard about it in the IRC channel though, so here is the offical topic where it is being discussed.

Ask Gobbo. I think he is in charge of that game, and will help you out.

No, it just uses the same 'engine' as DF and it is one of the Curses games. That is pretty much like saying that Portal and Team Fortress 2 are mods of Half-life 2. :P

The reason you probably thought it was a mod of DF is that it was made so that people could make the display code and stuff better without releasing the source of DF.

EDIT: Oh, just looked at that link of yours. Now I understand. Kobold Quest is in fact another game made by Toady, not a mod by the players like Kobold Camp. See here: http://www.bay12games.com/games/

That's Kobold Camp, a mod for Dwarf Fortress where you play as kobolds. :P

No, it just uses the same 'engine' as DF and it is one of the Curses games.

Curses is a terminal control library that Liberal Crime Squad and various other games by Bay12Games use to display text to the window. Dwarf Fortress and Kobold Quest are not Curses games; they both use OpenGL, and have nothing to do with the terminal. If it were me, I would go ahead and post about it in Dwarf Fortress general discussion, since that's the only place I've ever seen discussion of the game, that's where Toady One posts about it, that's where the 13-page thread on it is buried.

I just got done explaining why Kobold Quest is not a Curses game. This is the only thread in the history of the Curses forum which has ever so much as contained the phrase Kobold Quest. Every substantial discussion of Kobold Quest, including pages and pages of development talk and multiple threads that were started by Toady One, programmer of Dwarf Fortress and Kobold Quest and administrator of these forums, has been in the Dwarf Fortress section, with the exception of a small handful of questions in Other Games.

On the website, Kobold Quest is not in the Curses Arcade section. It's in the Other Games section, for games that aren't made with Curses. Liberal Crime Squad has its own section, because at one time, long before Dwarf Fortress was released, it was the most popular game on the site. Nonetheless, LCS is also a Curses game, because it was made with Curses. You need curses.dll to run it, curses.lib and curses.h to compile it. Kobold Quest has other OpenGL based dependencies.

Even if you totally don't care whether it's technically a Curses game or not, and you want to treat this section as the "ascii games" subforum, I have to ask, what's the point? Nobody else talks about it here, so why tell people to start threads about here? Why not have them go where all the other discussion of Kobold Quest is, and where they stand a decent chance of actually getting answers to their questions?

All you get here is an argument about whether you should have posted here.

Oops. Sorry. Yes, you're right Jonathan. Thank you for correcting my correction. I'm rather impressed by my ability to not understand what I was saying myself.

Other Games being so chock-full of games by other developers, I had forgot that it is also for other games by Bay12Games (and that Bay12Games even has other non-curses games.)

Also, Kobold Quest can be further confused with Kobold Quest 1 & 2 stories by AlanL.

I personally treat "Curses" as a "Everything Bay12games made" because the "Other games" are used as a "Everything Bay12games did not make" forum.

Especially since everyone only speaks about Liberal Crime Squad generally here and this forum is generally slow

I doubt speaking about Kobold Quest here will break the forums. (assuming it is a Bay12game)

On the other hand, Kobold Quest sucks ass compared to LCS and DF.

No, it's not going to break the forums, and you could argue I'm being too technical and perhaps be right. But even given that, there remains the problem that it will hurt your thread, and that's pretty significant when you're deciding where to post. From the perspective of the poster, I don't think it's helpful to encourage them to post their Kobold Quest threads someplace where the vast majority of the people interested in Kobold Quest and who have participated in discussions about it in the past won't see it.

If I'm wrong about that, I'm wrong about it. But consider that in more than a week, nobody has replied to this thread with an answer to the OP, and instead we just have a pile of opinions about where the thread should have been posted. I dare say that's pretty slim pickings as far as useful discussion goes.  :P
