about custom grid sizes
« on: November 25, 2008, 10:10:10 pm »

There is a certain point where the use of screen real estate becomes silly.

These screenshots are scaled down from a 2560x1600 resolution with 16x16 tiles.
The menu is needlessly cluttered. Options are stuffed onto the same line when there is plenty of space below to fill. This should scale with large grid height. And rather than having fixed widths for the view areas(minimap and menu) the user should be allowed to modify them.

Whenever I am not viewing the main map I am left with 9/10ths of my screen blank. Now this particular view doesn't have a clutter problem, but the trade window is a good example. Item names are being cut off when there is plenty of room to stretch.

A good point, but the custom grid sizes are a recent addition. To be honest, it seems like a quick hack to me. Sure it needs some work, but that's why DF's still an alpha ;)

Personally, I consider it a minor issue.

For sure, I know it doesn't affect a lot of people anyway, thought I'd put it out there.

Yeah, I don't think it was meant to be more than a quick hack.  The newer interfaces like historical maps in legends seem designed to make use of variable grids, but I think Toady's purposely holding off on revising the fortress mode menus.
