the first thing i recommend you do as an add on to the megaproject is to smooth the entire surface then kill off everyone who has seen it so it will be an unknown epic monument ;D

this is awesome. totally awesome. the adventure idea is great, the only issue being that traps, including pressure plates, don't seem to be currently working in adventure mode, to the detriment of everyone in the create-an-awesome-world-for-adventuring-in thread.

http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=25429.0

yeah. not having pressure plates is really annoying, they are great for doing things like making a floor with spikes that shoot out at timed intervals, life or death games of noughts and crosses, and releasing cage fulls of goblins on adventurers... if anyone knows the solution to that stuff i would love to hear it.

and i am massively in favor of a community fort made from that cube. release the save unto us! i want to carve a big obsidian sphinx with a dwarf beard already!

only slightly off topic - how did you get your 3dwarf to show obsidian as that awesome black stone? Mine shows all stone as the same color.

It's because it's not constructed -- it's natural obsidian, which 3dwarf apparently has a special texture for.  You should see the same black texture around the top of volcano or magma pipe if you look.

Hey, Magua, what sort of time did it take for you to do it(both in game and real world time)? And at what fps rate and with how many dwarves?

I set the pop cap at 50 dwarves, but due to the way the pop cap works, I actually ended up with 71 (down to 66 by the time things completed; industrial accidents and whatnot).  Also turned off babies.

World time was around 12 years, give or take.  Would've been shorter, but I took to designating huge amounts of work and then walking away, so the work would be completed and then most dwarves would be idle until the game paused for some reason.

Real time was around 3 weeks, give or take, but that was intermittent playing, and doing other things (battling the HFS, building the curtain wall, etc.)  I did end up writing an AutoHotKey script that would construct ten tiles of walls or bridges using the first available material, which I used to build the mold.

I'll get the save up to dffd today

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

To Chesire: You can turn on traps in adventure mode VIA the init file. It means you can't have any traps in your obsidian block besides pressure plates, lest you kill the adventurer BEFORE he reaches the fun part. Heh.

You can use any traps except for cage traps. They'll just kill the adventurer real quick. Of course you could do a sort of "who can find the right path through the maze first" with traps scattered throughout to kill off dwarves who go the wrong way.

Make a massive maze, then post it in the adventure mode section.

and make sure you have at least a room with pressure plates that will take out the floor below him so he will have to walk all the way back to the start through a seperate path

or.....................

make it a training ground. with different levels of water for swimming, plenty of animals in a pit to shoot/attack, and many other things

Now get rid of everything that you've built on that map save for the tower in the middle, then if you can, completely destroy the magma pipe and any evidence on how the hell you built the cube.

has anyone built a fortress inside the block yet?
If you have did you get rid of the magma sidearm tower thing, and if so, how?
i want to get rid of that tower, then dump all the items in the original fort into the magma pipe, then kill al the dwarves and then reclaim the cube with some new migrants that can start to shape out the fort inside the block. But i cant find a way of doing the first step.

Ensure the pumps are off, or the source hatch for the magma sidearm is closed.

Set the bridges where the sidearm meets the tower, and the bridge at the top of the sidearm, to auto-pull.  The bridges will atom smash the lava, and eventually you should be left with 1/7 magma, which you can either wait to evaporate.

The simplest way to remove the sidearm is to deconstruct it from the cube, and then deconstruct its base.  The rest of it should collapse into component parts immediately.

it'd be cool if dropping such a huge block into the ocean would create a tsunami.
