Dwarven Halls - Megaproject, need suggestions
« on: November 24, 2008, 02:32:57 pm »

I've embarked on a rather massive mountain that has everything I need for my newest grand idea. The whole thing started with watching Lord of the Rings for the umpteenth time just after becoming bored of my semi-castle'ish fort. After the Moria scene, I thought to myself... It must be awesome to dig out something like that in DF.

Currently I've got two massive sircular staircases, where all the excessive rock is dug out and channeled away, making a huge drop down into the mountain.

After reaching the upper z-level of my magma pipe, I dug out a large area for my future forges, trade depot and military startions. (Right under the staircase, to prevent cave adapted champions.)

Currently I'm planning to dig out a large hall with several (5-7)'ish z-level high pillars (all smoothed when I get the workforce required).
and a large cave-inspired area near my underground river.

Also planning on setting traps to trap the local (5'ish) River Crocodiles and make them trainable....
also considering a Magma-fall somewhere deep inside my fort... preferably inside my cave/dininghall, combined with a artificial waterfall that in the future will be dumped into the pits.
What would you consider ultimatly dwarven?

A very complex trap including lava, water, trapdoors, pressure plates, soapmakers nobles, and goblins.

Add in a fire imp for bonus points.

And make it a airlock, so during sieges, you can have a impenetrable entrance >:]

There's a map on the DF map department where someone made a magma maze which gobos had to traverse.

You could try something like that.

I prefer to dispose of my enemies Hammer style... there will ofcourse be measurements taken to tip the balance in my favour though ;)

you need the magma fall to go in the room with the forges and feed into the channel that supplies the forges with magma. and then go into a nice chasm or what have you.

sounds good... but then you'd need a lot of magma flowing, to sustain the 4/7 depth required =/

Be careful putting your magmafall and waterfall close together. It's like this. You know what you get from a waterfall? Mist. You know what you get from a magmafall? Magma mist. You know what you get when you mix magma and water? Obsidian.

You know what you get when you mix mist and magma mist?

DEATH HAIL.

Dig down to the lowest Z-level.  Create a stockpile there that takes from all other finished goods piles.  Set it to allow only drums.

A big long hallway that has a magma fall on each side?

It felt a bit like a movie in which two stoners try to steal a military helicopter

And a river flowing trough the middle... with bridges... in sweet colours.... me likes!

Well, should be possible to divert the magma back into the pipe... or make sure that the river/magma only meet on the lower levels.. and try to prevent the spam of falling rocks

when you make the rooms for the nobles, dig out a channel infront of the door and build a bridge there, then run magma under it.

Divide by zero and sacrifice some of the players to Armok probably. Though this would be somewhat cool to have around.
Oh, Toady already does such things on a regular basis. I think he calls it 'Tuesday'.

Cover the edges of your grand hall in semi-columns, and fill the space between them with metal (bar, not ore) statues. Bonus points if the metal is adamantine. Illustration:

Naturally, every z-level should look like this.

either that or fill the alcoves in one hall with tombs so that you have a massive crypt spanning many z levels lined with the dwarven ancestors
