Planescape = Crap graphics (even for its time), and a mediocre (or crap) combat system to boot. Despite that it's atmosphere and story might very well be the best I've ever seen in a video game.

PS:T BG and IWD for a sort of spectrum in this regard:

Icewind dale had crap story and thought out tactical combat.
Planescape had a great story but combat was for 9 year-olds.

Baldur's Gate was a balance of the two.

What's up with your furries detachment from reality? I would even get if it was solely a sexual fetish.. but I don't get how you make a lifestyle of it? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

And yeah... the whole fallout system ran in it's own reality, especially regarding combat... but to be honest, there isn't much leeway in a game like fallout to make combat realistic, without killing the player every few steps. (Well, it even did that sometimes anyway)

Regarding spore... I have a question, because I don't know the game well and don't have enough interest to wade through all the hype and nerd-ejaculate... how does this whole online aspect work? Other players can visit your planet? Is there a way to stop this from happening? I don't see that as a positive thing, to be honest. If the game is sandbox-y enough, I wouldn't like to scuffle around with some 14 year olds when I have the spare time to play. I don't play online games for that reason.

It downloads other people's planets onto your game, and your planet onto other people's games, but they're asynchronous, you can't influence their game, and they can't influence your game, aside from a statistic you can see somewhere in-game that shows what other people did to your planet.

Not only planets, but they're creatures, blueprints for buildings, ships, cars etc.  too. So you might be attacking a creature someone across the street made. Or across the country.

Yes.  We are all aware that it is cool to be a pessimist, but you're taking it too far.  Of course the game will not live up to expectations, but Will Wright has suggested that it's already implemented several times.

If you mean that in Spore, stuff will be instanced onto your computer, and it won't have any effect on the creatures on their computer if you kill them, that's already working. And has been for a long time. I know this simply because it's not hard to do at all -- easier, in fact, than keeping things synced -- and they've been talking about it working that way for years.

I just remember the game Stalker, which was nothing more than a shooter with lousy graphics in the end.

Maybe, after all, spore will be a little more fun.. hey it's Will Wright, not some nondescript Ukrainian developer.

But dwarf fortress will still rule in the end. Because it has blood and vomit.

STALKER made me so sad...  I understand a few omissions if there's a deadline, but come on.  They took out EVERYTHING that made me want the game.  With the Redux mod it's tolerable, but still unacceptably far from what it advertised to be.
