Sand
« on: November 22, 2008, 05:54:11 pm »

I've tried: Making sand "stone" at the smelter, making sand "sand" at the smelter, putting sand blocks in a bin, and gathering sand from sand "stone" constructed floors.

Is there _any_ way to make usable sand from a smelter reaction?

Usable sand is a powder, which goes into a bag.
Smelter can't do that.

Mark every kind of soil as sand. You're good to go.

That isn't even close to what he was asking...

Guess you'd better go back to making erotic pictures of goblins, because, uh...

It's not like you get soil on every single map.

Hmm.

Is it possible to mark non-soil as sand, and still be able to gather from it and still mine it as usable stone?

It's not like you get soil on every single map.

Any map with an underground river can have neverending sand.

Find the river, muddy some squares, let tower caps sapling grow, have someone stop on it (Military patrol of 3 squares) and it becomes sand. You can revert it back to normal by building a dirt road or other construction over it.

I'm just reading between the lines. He's obviously asking for a smelter method so he can force otherwise-sandless maps to have sand so he can enjoy glass. Since "do without" is not what he's looking for and "embark in an area that has sand" is apparently not an option, his best chance for getting free infinite-glass is to turn whatever soil he has nearby into a sand source.
Since he appears to be the kind of guy who HAS to have sand but is already too preoccupied trying to fill out other requirements to embark in a place that actually has sand, I strongly doubt that he's embarking somewhere that doesn't have soil.
Therefore, my response stands. The solution he's probably looking for is turning nearby soil into a sand source, since the smelter won't help him produce raw, gatherable sand.

Why not just mod the smelter to spit out crystal rocks to make crystal glass?

I guess it would make sense to turn the sandy- types of soil (sandy loam for example) into a sand source if you wanted to keep realism.

It would be nice if you could have a reaction that would input a type of stone and output sand, as you grind it up.
