Do goblins ever die of hunger and thirst?
« on: November 21, 2008, 12:10:03 am »

I have trapped a handful of gobbos in an area that is difficult to reach.  They can't harm anyone and no one can harm them.  It's been a few seasons now and they show no sign of dying yet.

Will they eventually starve, or am I gonna have to drop the military in there and cause a bloodbath?

No, they won't die. And you won't be getting any more goblins until they're dead or caged.

Train up a few dozen war dogs, then you can literally drop them in to take care of it.

Not true, I've been collecting goblins in cages for years and they keep coming.

They won't starve, though, gonna have to deal with them somehow.

Did you even read that post? He said goblins wont come unless the remaining goblins on your map are dead or caged. You said you had been caging, so it makes sense that more goblins arrive. Please read posts before answering!

So a pit of goblins prevents unwanted sieging?

Yeah, it should.  As long as they're not caged (I think you already meant that, but just for clarity)

Captured entities won't die of hunger or thirst. They don't need food or drink at all...sadly. Hopefully Toady will change this in the future, and make it realistic.

Right now they're not caged.  They're just wandering around inside a place they can't get out of.  It's under a string of drawbridges.

Now, here's the plan.

Using one newly drafted peasant, I place him at one end of the string.  Meanwhile, I order a stockpile of stone at the other end of the string.  I then draft a skilled mason and place him near the stockpile.  I draft a third mason and order him outside the fort.

I pull the lever.

The string of drawbridges retracts, dropping both dwarves inside.  The mason gets undrafted and then embarks on a super sneaky mission!

While the military dwarf causes a ruckus among the gobbos, the mason quickly builds an up stair that will be located at a seam in the string of drawbridges.  As soon as this is done, the mason left upstairs is undrafted and ordered to build the corresponding down stairs.  After the mason has escaped, I close the drawbridges, thereby re-sealing the way until I choose otherwise.

Once this is done, normal operations resume and I retract the bridge covering the stairway.  By doing so, the gobbos are able to get out and resume normal operations, and I open up a trapped alternate route to properly cage them.

It can not fail!

You seem to be relying a lot on the ability of masons (who might run off for food or another job at the moment they're undrafted) to build stairways in the time it takes a bunch of goblins to kill a "newly drafted peasant"; which is usually no time at all.

Why don't you just shoot them?

Or drop a segment of constructed floors on them?

Or just send in your actually militiary. If you have peasants tough enough to take down/distract a whole goblin contingency for that long, your real fighters should be able to rip those gobbos into finely shredded pieces.
